Job summary

We are looking to recruit a Health Care Assistant to work with the Acute Medical Unit at Barnsley Hospital.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, experienced and flexible person with excellent organisational skills to join our team. The main focus of this role is to provide high quality compassionate care whilst maintaining patient safety on the ward.

The postholder will work as part of the multidisciplinary team delivering a range of designated tasks/duties of a clinical and non- clinical nature including providing dignified personal care to patients, working within agreed policy and procedures.

The post holder will undertake assessment and recording of basic patient clinical observations and test results as part of the overall assessment of a patient.

The post holder will work under the supervision of the NMC Registrant at all times, who holds delegated accountability for the work designated.

Main duties of the job

Working under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse/Midwife, knowing what is expected of you, not working outside of your role, following reasonable requests and instructions within your work which may include chaperone of patients, transfer of goods and equipment between departments. Following locally agreed competency based tasks supported by training and education to gain theoretical underpinning knowledge to undertake:

  • Basic clinical observations i.e. heart rate
  • Blood glucose recordings
  • Urinalysis testing
  • Lying and standing blood pressure monitoring
  • Fluid balance recording
  • 25-point skin check
  • Bladder scanning
  • Venepuncture
  • Cannulation
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring

The above generic list of competency-based clinical tasks will be tailored to what you specifically need to carry out the health care assistant role on AMU and this will be recorded within your individual competencies file. This is to ensure you have been trained, assessed and signed competent to meet the standards required to undertake the clinical tasks needed that are relevant to your area. There will also need to be sufficient opportunity for you to undertake the tasks on your particular ward/department for you to be able to maintain your competence.
