An opportunity has arisen to join the Trust in a FY2 Equivalent Locally Employed Doctor position. We have 4 posts available in our medical specialties:
Emergency Medicine (12 months fixed term)
Acute Medical Unit (12 months fixed term)
Respiratory (12 months fixed term)
General Medical Winter Ward (6 months fixed term)
Main duties of the job
The postholder will be involved with patient care as follows:
- Clerking admissions to the Ward.
- Receiving and accepting emergencies from General Practitioners and from other Departments in the hospital.
- Organisation of investigations of patients on the relevant Wards.
- Daily management of patients and ward rounds under the direction of the Registrar or Consultant.
- Assisting in Medical Procedures.
- Helping in completion of discharge paperwork (D1s) for patients.
- Take part in the full on-call rota with responsibility for holding a bleep.

Barnsley Hospital serves and provides care to a population of 230,000 and employs around 3,500 people. The Trust provides a full range of acute clinical services. It has an emergency department with a dedicated childrens emergency department with integrated childrens assessment unit, co-located SDEC Medical and SDEC Surgical facilities and provides acute medical and surgical services, including intensive care services, to the population and visitors to the Barnsley and South Yorkshire area.
We have an extensive learning and development programme and a fully equipped Education Centre. Within the Education Centre is a widely stocked library and resource centre, lecture theatres, a clinical skills training room, a resuscitation and manual handling training room, meeting rooms, classrooms, IT suites and a video conference room for Cancer Services. The Trust works closely with neighbouring Teaching Hospitals and receive Medical Students from Sheffield University. LEDs will have access to a Clinical Supervisor and e-portfolio.
Whilst working in these posts the successful candidates will have the opportunity to:
Build upon undergraduate education.
Gain experience and familiarity in dealing with a wide variety of medical and surgical conditions and the management of co-existing medical issues in medical and surgical patients.
Develop the skills of history taking, physical examination, appropriate investigation and rational prescribing.
Full clinical supervision is provided to permit completion of competencies.
Assessment of acutely unwell patients
Assessment and reassessment of elective and emergency patients to ensure they progress through the process of investigation, diagnosis and treatment
Discharge planning
Time and Risk management
Communication with patients, family members and carers
Theatre attendance where permitted by adequate ward cover.
Involvement with departmental audit and quality improvement initiatives
Participation in the on-call rota with the responsibility for carrying a bleep.
All duties are undertaken with multiple tiers of available senior supervision.
