Job summary

This is a 16 hour post.

The Colorectal/stoma team are looking for a kind, caring and enthusiastic individual to join us.

The role of the Colorectal/stoma support worker is unique, and the job includes clerical, data collection and clinical duties with the main aim in assisting in the smooth running of the service.

The role requires the individual to have compassion and sensitivity, to provide support and care for patients of all ages. The role requires an excellent communicator in both face to face conversations and polite telephone skills to speak with patients and other professionals and the wider multidisciplinary team members.

Our aim as a team is to ensure that patients with bowel cancer and bowel problems are provided with consistent and supportive management.

The team is office based and we are a team of six staff working alongside a cancer support worker and a cancer care navigator.

Stoma care is a huge part of the role and teaching patients to self-manage before discharge is really rewarding.

Main duties of the job

The role is to provide support to the Colorectal/stoma care nursing team, to

undertake a range of duties as designated by the Clinical Nurse Specialist on duty.

To maintain strong communication links with the MDT and wards caring for colorectal/stoma care patients.

Promote excellent communications links with primary care services, tertiary care and other health providers in the voluntary sector, which enable patients to manage their stoma independently.

Whilst maintaining a professional attitude at all times, develop sound interpersonal

relationships with patients and colleagues.

Monitor the stoma stock levels and re-order/restock as required, ensuring the store rooms are kept tidy and the clinical room is always ready for use.

Ensure the maintenance of accurate records, having due regard to legal aspects, confidentiality and management information requirements. Recording patient interaction on our bespoke computer system MIME.

Answering telephone messages and booking and scheduling appointments for patients.

Triaging telephone and face to face enquiries.

Supporting the colorectal nurse led cancer clinic ensuring appointments are timely and patients are contacted.

Collecting information for the ERP (Enhanced Recovery Programme) audit, working closely with the audit department, inputting data to improve best practice.
