Job summary

Barnsley Hospital are seeking an experienced medical secretary to support the general surgery services. This is both a demanding and rewarding role and it is essential that the successful applicant is able to work effectively as part of the team, supporting and assisting colleagues, whilst prioritising and managing a diverse workload.

The post holder will be responsible for the effective provision of a comprehensive secretarial/administrative service to a team of consultants, middle grade doctors, junior doctors and nursing teams in general surgery.

Previous medical secretarial experience and knowledge of medical terminology would be preferred, but is not essential.

The general surgery team at Barnsley is made up of a diverse, welcoming team of medics, nurses and administrative personnel who provide a high quality of care for patients and service users in Barnsley.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will act as the focal point of contact and be responsible for the dissemination of information, messages and enquiries for the medical team, liaising with multi-disciplinary team members, as well as other health professionals/staff both internally and externally.

The medical secretary post is responsible for transcribing audio files accurately using digital dictation, within the Trust timeframes, including any additional tasks e.g. follow up appointments, letters to other professionals etc.

Successful candidates will have good communication skills, be organised and work well as part of a team. Post holders are expected to have a flexible and "can do" approach in ensuring the work of the department is carried out to the required high standards.

The role is varied and requires proven admin experience with excellent IT skills including very good knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 package. The post holder will need to have high level of communication skills, an eye for detail and an ability to self-manage competing priorities daily. This can be a fast-paced role and can provide the right candidate with a fantastic opportunity to take on new skills, knowledge and experiences which can help support further career progression. This is a full time role, working hours can be flexible depending on the needs of the service and post holder.
