The
Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (BHNFT) Emergency Department (ED) are
seeking to recruit to our dynamic team. The successful candidate will have
previous experience training in EM at ACCS Level. This post is fixed for 12
months.
Barnsley
Emergency Department sees over 100,000 patients yearly. The department boasts
specialised areas in which adult and paediatric patients are treated in minors,
majors and resus. The department is currently supported by 22 Consultants.
Point
of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) training has progressed significantly within BHNFT
in the last few years with development of a fortnightly trust-wide POCUS club,
ED departmental ultrasound training clinics and the South Yorkshire Focused
UltraSound in Intensive Care (FUSIC-SY) course. The acquisition of a high-fidelity
ultrasound simulator, Bodyworks Eve, has been a hugely exciting advancement in
our ultrasound training provision in Barnsley, allowing real-time scanning to demonstrate
pathological findings. Ultrasound guided nerve block provision in the ED is
continuing to develop, providing improved pain management for our patients.
This
post is required to commence as soon as possible and will provide senior medical
cover within Emergency Medicine working alongside Consultants, Middle Grade
doctors, Specialty and GP Trainees, FY2 and FY1 doctors.
Main duties of the job
The post will comprise
50% clinical working within our middle grade rota. 50% of the
post-holders time will be assigned to the development of a specialist interest
in ultrasound, specifically Emergency Medicine POCUS. There will be
opportunities for delivery of practical teaching as well as progressing your
existing basic ultrasound skills to a more in-depth level. We anticipate the
post holder will help to develop and improve existing services such as delivery
of ultrasound training to our PAs and ACPs as well as developing skills in, and
teaching, delivery of US-guided nerve blocks including facia-iliaca blocks and
erector spinae plane blocks.
In their
clinical role the successful applicant(s) will be expected to:
Receive,
assess and manage new adult and paediatric patients presenting to the Emergency
Department.
Treat
patients and arrange admission/ discharge or follow-up as necessary.
Take
an active part in the Emergency Department across minors, majors and resus,
including leading resuscitation of multiply injured and seriously ill patients.
Participate
in the training programme for the senior doctors, including providing teaching
sessions, and provide supervision for our juniors as appropriate.
The post-holder
may need to deputise from time to time, for absent colleagues, as far as this
is consistent with above duties.

The post holder will work 50% clinically in the Emergency
Department (ED) seeing a wide range of emergency presentations in a supported
capacity. They will also have 50% personal time allocated to developing their experience
in ultrasound. We will provide consultant-led clinical supervision for this
role. There will be flexibility in the role should you wish to work in a LTFT capacity.
The post holder will be expected to contribute to the
teaching and training of staff in the Emergency Department. The Department has
a weekly teaching programme for the junior doctors and medical students as well
as a monthly programme of teaching for the senior doctors, both of which you
will be invited to attend/ participate in.
The post holder in invited to contribute to medical
education and training in the trust. There are multiple opportunities to
develop ultrasound training and ultrasound-guided block provision in the Emergency
Department and across the trust. Projects currently in development include an
ultrasound training programme for Advanced Care Practitioners (ACPs), an annual
Emergency Medicine POCUS course training day and training sessions integrating
high-fidelity in situ simulation with ultrasound in the ED. The post holder is
invited to contribute to the development of the above. There would be an
opportunity for the post-holder to undertake additional training opportunities
such as the FUSIC-SY course. The post
holder will have the opportunity to study for a trust-funded post graduate
certificate in POCUS as part of their fellowship.

ultrasound, director of medical education and lead nurses to develop departmental
and trust-wide ultrasound training. This may include introducing innovations
