1663 - Plaster Technician

Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

The closing date is 04 November 2024

Job summary

The plaster room is part of the Fracture clinic at Barnsley hospital, its main role is to support the daily clinics within fracture clinic but also to support the wider hospital including ED, Wards, other outpatient areas such as paediatrics by offering a high standard specialised service in the application of casts, manipulation of limbs, wound checks and much more.

Main duties of the job

The efficiency and appropriate staffing of this service allows many of the lesser known services to continue to have a positive impact on the patients within the Trust.

The workload is varied and can be extremely complex in nature and regularly includes supporting the fracture clinic, walk-in appointments for patients who are experiencing issues with their casts, emergency admissions through ED, often for patients in the RESUS area needing the manipulation and application of a cast and supporting ward-based patients either by facilitating them in the clinic or by a staff member attending the ward to review a patient. The volume of work from outside the routine fracture clinic appointments is unpredictable but consistent.

The team also support the diabetic services along with the podiatry service and complete specialised, time consuming casting for patients with pressure ulcers and diabetic neuropathy and the demand for this service is already increasing.

Specialised paediatric casting is also a large part of the workload within plaster room, from physio requesting serial casting to paediatric consultants requiring Ponseti casting for new-born babies with talipes.

The technicians also support the surgeons when they are in theatre often being called to apply complex casts directly post-surgery, this can be time consuming and often difficult to negotiate timewise when in the middle of a busy clinic.
