The Theatre Suite at Barnsley Hospital consists of 7 elective operating theatres, 1 emergency operating theatre and 1 obstetric theatre. We also have a designated Day Surgery Unit, with two day surgery theatres and two minor operation rooms, and a Pre-assessment Unit which provides peri-operative assessment for our surgical patients. Our clinical work is varied and includes, obstetrics, colorectal surgery, vascular surgery, trauma and orthopaedics, gynaecology, breast surgery, urology, ophthalmology, paediatric surgery, maxillo facial surgery, head and neck surgery and oral surgery.

We are looking for a motivated, talented, exceptional RGN to join our Pre-assessment team as a Pre-Assessment Practitioner. We expect the highest standards of clinical care for our patients and we are proud of our achievements regarding patient safety.

You will be able to communicate effectively and adopt a practical common sense approach to working, be able to work well under pressure, and you should have evidence of continued professional development. The ability to motivate and lead a team with significant ward/clinic experience at Band 5 level is crucial. Ideally you would be experienced in pre-assessment - being flexible and adaptable is crucial in our busy department.

Main duties of the job

The successful postholder will be responsible for the development of the operational policy for the surgical preassessment, to ensure that patients are ready for surgery. The safe preparation of patients for surgical procedures, and transfer to theatre.

Responsibility for the day-to-day management of the preassessment service and directing programmes of care for adult and paediatric surgical patients.

Undertake duties of non medical prescribing within own field of professional competence.

Undertaking a range of nurse led practices, as agreed by medical colleagues, whilst working within the increased scope of professional practice guidelines, and the NMC code of professional conduct.

Liaison with the multidisciplinary team, patients, relatives and carers, to maximise post operation planning for patients.

Support junior staff within the department.The mentoring, supervision and support OD Trainee assistant practitioners and associate nurses.
