Barnsley
Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit a Consultant
Obstetrician/Gynaecologist ideally with a special interest in Obstetric
medicine. An exciting opportunity has arisen to develop the maternal medicine
service in conjunction with the regional maternity medicine network. It is
anticipated that the successful candidate, with the support of the new
maternity medicine network, will help consolidate current services as well as
developing further services in line with the national maternity plan and Saving
Babies Lives V3. The postholder will also have the opportunity to undertake
the role of fetal monitoring lead which will be well supported by the current
lead and department. There will also be the opportunity to develop a special
interest if so desired.
Main duties of the job
To provide with consultant colleagues, an effective Obstetrics and Gynaecology service to Barnsley Hospital, including:
Working closely
with the multidisciplinary team to provide a high quality Obstetric and Gynaecology service
Advising clinical colleagues
on matters within
his/her sphere of
expertise
Liaising with other
health care organisations, Social
Services, General Practitioners and voluntary organisations
as required
Responsibility for
keeping services up to date and giving direction to future
developments

Job responsibilities
Obstetrics
The Obstetric service
provides a comprehensive local service, and the team manage all midwifery
services in the hospital and the community.
Progress towards improved continuity of care has been considerable and
the development of the role of midwifery staff has been significant. The unit
has been an early adopter of the SBL care bundles and is progressing very well with
SBLV3. The unit is in the top ten nationally for its detection rate for growth
restriction.
There are
multidisciplinary specialist clinics such as Medical Disorders, Fetal Medicine,
Perinatal Mental Health, Preterm Clinic etc. The postholder will also have an
opportunity to work towards running the Medical Disorders clinic.
Gynaecology
There are well
established services providing, in addition to General Gynaecology, accredited
specialised clinics including Colposcopy, Urogynaecology, 2 week wait Cancer
referral, Hysteroscopy, Vulval, EPAU and Termination services. There is a new
Gynaecology Day Assessment unit providing service over 5 days during the week. The
postholder will be asked to participate in general gynaecology clinics.
Inpatient facilities
There are 24 obstetric
beds and 6 gynaecology beds in Barnsley Hospital. There is a 7 place brand new Delivery
Suite. There are 14 neonatal cots, four
of which are for intensive/high dependency care. The hospital has a well-equipped 13 bedded
combined ITU/HDU facility, supported by a progressive team of anaesthetists,
including dedicated Obstetric Anaesthetists in and out of hours.
Day Surgery and Endoscopy Unit
This unit has two
theatres supporting treatment and endoscopy rooms. As far as practicable the Trust undertakes
all Day Surgery in these facilities.
There are three designated Gynaecology sessions in the unit each week.
Outpatient Facilities
The outpatient
facilities provide consulting and examination rooms, treatment and
investigative facilities for Colposcopy, Urogynaecology and Hysteroscopy, a
joint PMB / 2 week wait clinic and a Vulval clinic. The recent redevelopment of
the whole of the Women and Childrens inpatient services have improved the
clinical environment significantly.
Also located within the
Outpatient area are dedicated Ultrasound facilities supporting the Obstetrics
and Gynaecology service.
Antenatal Day Unit
There is a separate
Antenatal Day Unit (ANDU) for the assessment and monitoring of high risk
patients in the second and third trimesters.
Midwife sonographers contribute significantly to the work in ANDU.
Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit
Additional scanning
facilities have been established to improve early pregnancy assessment.
Multidisciplinary Working
The Trust has a
reputation for good multidisciplinary working.
There are well established relationships with medical, paediatric,
surgical and anaesthetic colleagues. In
gynaecology, an effective multi-disciplinary team has been established for
cancer services. A number of multi-disciplinary groups are established in
obstetrics including a Labour Ward Forum and perinatal morbidity and mortality
MDT meeting. Relationships between
midwives and medical staff are excellent and built on mutual respect.
