Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen as were looking to appoint an enthusiastic Orthodontist Consultant to work across both Barnsley Hospital and Sheffields Charles Clifford Dental Hospital.
This post will support an expanding clinical workload and contribute to the management of complex cases.

Main duties of the job
The postholders duties will be primarily based at Barnsley Hospital but will work 2PAs at Sheffields Charles Clifford Dental Hospital.
Main duties include:
To provide orthodontic services for the population of the surrounding area
To actively participate as a member of the orthodontic team to provide excellent care to our patients
To actively contribute to the development of orthodontic services
To provide advice to dental and medical practitioners working in the primary care sector
Undertake Orthodontic clinics within the outpatient setting at both Barnsley Hospital and Charles Clifford Dental Hospital
Take forward the Orthodontic service to include the management and orthodontic treatment for orthognathic and orthodontic patients
Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including administrative duties associated with patient care
Attendance at joint Orthognathic clinics
To provide advice to hospital clinicians including consultants in oral and maxillofacial surgery
Participation in clinical audit and in continuing medical/dental education
The post holder will not be required to participate in an on-call rota

The Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery & Orthodontics Department sits within the Surgery CBU and provides acute hospital services for the population of Barnsley and surrounding areas, with onward Managed Clinical Network access to more specialised / advanced clinical input with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust through the Charles Clifford Dental and Royal Hallamshire Hospitals.
The Orthodontic and OMFS medical team currently consists of one Orthodontist Consultant, two OMFS Consultants, one Locum OMFS Consultant, two Associate Specialists, two Specialty Doctors and two Dental Core Trainees (DCT), as listed below.
The Department is looking to recruit a keen Orthodontist Consultant who will become an integral part of the routine workload and case mix management, with a key administrative input and some clinical freedom to develop their interests.
The role will be based at and will be employed by Barnsley District General Hospital and will work one day per week (2 PAs) at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

There are 10 DCTs employed by STH who rotate to Barnsley on a rolling fortnightly rota, with two DCTs being present on the Barnsley site each week.
The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery & Orthodontics strives to provide as wide a remit of clinical service provision to the people of Barnsley and its districts as possible, with some clinical overlap into dental, ENT, Dermatology and surgical areas.
The Orthodontic Department is a purpose built, modern, spacious and well-equipped facility which is shared with the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery team. There are four shared single surgeries and a twin, open plan surgery for Orthodontic use.
The Department is dedicated to cross team working and there is an established Orthognathic service with joint clinics held in partnership with the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and Restorative colleagues who have specialist interests in this field.
The departments of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics have clinics running in parallel, Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 5pm with a shared reception and waiting area.
Both departments are supported by Specialist Dental Nurses and their own administrative and secretarial team.
The department has digital radiography and orthognathic Dolphin planning software with the department having its own specialist team of rotating Radiographers based on the department Monday to Friday.
A full-time Specialist Orthodontic and Oral Maxillofacial Technician is based on the department and locum Technicians are available to cover annual leave, sickness etc.
Consultant office accommodation is based within the department.

The hospital is situation to the west of the City Centre and forms part of the University teaching complex, which includes the Royal Hallamshire Hospital as well as being within the University Campus.
The Charles Clifford Dental Hospital and adjacent Royal Hallamshire Hospital are equipped to a high standard with digital radiology and a computerised operating management system. Specialist equipment including dedicated surgical microscopes are available, as is cone beam CT and ultra sound services. There is also a dedicated department for the Orthodontic Department.
The Hospital serves a resident population of approximately 538,000 and in addition, provides specialist services for a wider area, so this figure rises to approximately 672,000 when considering patients from adjacent districts. Specialist services are provided in the departments of Oral Medicine, Oral Microbiology, OMF Pathology, OMF Radiology, Oral Special Needs Dentistry and Oral Surgery, Restorative Dentistry, Orthodontics and Paediatric Dentistry.
The Orthodontic Department
The department provides specialist orthodontic advice, routine and multi-disciplinary treatment and also provides clinical and didactic teaching in orthodontics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The 15-chair Orthodontic Department is located on the first floor of the Dental Hospital. The Department has a multidisciplinary clinic area, 3 side surgeries and a Covid secure open plan 9 chair polyclinic. There are separate undergraduate and postgraduate cephalometric tracing rooms, equipped with computer facilities for digitising lateral skull radiographs, storing digital images, orthognathic planning (Dolphin) and for medical audit (OPAS,TOPAS). All radiographs are digital and available on IMPAX. The Charles Clifford has access to Cone Beam CT and Digital Model scanning also. Digital camera equipment is available and there is a designated clinical photography area adjacent to the clinic.

Teaching
All Consultants are expected to assume responsibility, both singularly and corporately for the management of junior or attached staff. The successful candidate will be expected to develop his / her teaching skills to provide high quality training in orthodontics for career junior staff, providing clinical teaching for the SpRs enrolled on the three-year training programme.
The Job Plan
A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee, Service Manager and Clinical Lead on behalf of the Medical Director; this will be done within three months of starting the post. It is the post holders responsibility, working with the Clinical Lead, to ensure that the job plan reflects an average timetable of activity.
The post holder and Clinical Lead will review the job plan annually with the Service Manager. Either may propose amendment of the job plan. The expectation is that the Trust and the post holder will work together to benefit patients and individuals will view the job plan as a guide which may be amended in line with service changes. The formulation of the job plan should not prevent a flexible approach to work to ensure the efficient running of the department. The stated duties may be amended in the light of progress, accrual of skills or development of specialist skills.
The provisional Job Plan will consist of 7PAs (clinics, admin and SPA) in Barnsley across three days and 2 PAs in Sheffield at Charles Clifford Dental Hospital (clinics and admin).

An existing research interest would be welcomed and there would be strong support and collaboration from the University of Sheffield and other universities. The Trust is very supportive of research.
Library Facilities/Postgraduate Education
We have an extensive learning and development programme and a fully equipped Education Centre. Within the Education Centre is a widely stocked library and resource centre, lecture theatres, a clinical skills training room, a resuscitation and manual handling training room, meeting rooms, classrooms, IT suites and a video conference room for Cancer Services
All members of staff and students will be able to access the library with their Trust ID badge out of normal staffed hours. No other areas in the Education Centre will be accessible during this time.
This is a positive enhancement to the Library Service that brings us into line with all other Trust libraries who already offer a 24-hour service.
