Are you passionate about delivering high-quality patient care and making a real difference every day? We are looking for a full-time, compassionate and enthusiastic Registered Nurse to join our team on Ward 36 as a Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse.
This post is available from November 2025 until March 2026 and offers the opportunity to work on our busy but friendly 16-bed general surgical ward at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
About Ward 36:
Ward 36 cares for a wide range of elective and emergency surgical patients, including those undergoing procedures in colorectal, upper GI, breast, and general surgery. We support patients through the pre- and post-operative journey, managing both short and longer stays. This provides excellent opportunities to develop a solid foundation in surgical care within a supportive, team-focused environment. Ideally, the successful candidate will have knowledge in caring for medical patients.

Main duties of the job
The Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse role is critical in maintaining safe, high-quality care delivery on our ward. This position provides essential clinical leadership, ensuring that Barnsley Hospitals CARE values are upheld in practice.
Key Responsibilities
Provide visible leadership and act as a role model for nursing and multidisciplinary colleagues.
Lead the coordination of safe, effective patient care, including managing staffing levels, skill mix, and daily allocation.
Support delivery of Trust quality standards, CQC requirements, and evidence-based nursing practice.
Act as shift coordinator, ensuring smooth patient flow, timely discharges, and escalation of clinical issues.
Deliver and monitor safe care for acutely unwell patients, using NEWS2, sepsis screening, and escalation protocols.
Mentor, support, and assess junior nursing staff and students, ensuring ongoing professional development.
Contribute to audit, incident investigation, and implementation of patient safety initiatives.
During the winter months, Ward 36 expands to a 28-bed unit, providing care not only to surgical patients but also to those with medical, orthopaedic and gynaecology needs. This makes the role varied and fast-paced, offering excellent experience for a motivated nurse who enjoys working in a dynamic environment and is committed to delivering safe, high-quality care.
