well-respected Acute Medicine team here at Barnsley Hospital.
The
successful applicant will join a team of ten consultants. Each member of the
consultant team demonstrates clinical excellence, and each brings additional
skills to the team, including research, teaching, education and management.
Most importantly, the team work collaboratively together.
Main duties of the job
This is a substantive post and will support the expansion of services to
meet activity and service specification demands as we move towards a 12 hour /
7-day AIM cover model and includes daytime work on the AMU, Short stay Unit (SSU) and Medical SDEC (Same
day emergency care).
This is an

interests.
Any
candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be
considered for the posts; if such a person is appointed modification of the job

The
current staffing is 10 Consultants 2 SAS doctors, 1 ST4-7, a mixture of CT3-6,
CT1/GP VTS/F2 or F1 doctors and 6 full-time Physician Associates.
The
hospital is an associate teaching hospital of the University of Sheffield and
the Emergency Department is actively involved in undergraduate medical
education. Candidates must be on the Specialist Register or within six months
of eligibility for entry.

Physicians in Acute Medicine to join
our well-respected and dynamic team. This
post is to allow expansion of services to meet activity and service
specification demands as we move towards a 12 hour / 7-day AIM cover model and
includes daytime work on the AMU, Short stay Unit (SSU) and Medical SDEC (Same day emergency care).
Sub-speciality interest and hybrid working patterns to facilitate will be
considered and encouraged.

recently opened a new 16 bedded state of the art critical care unit, has
expanded and refurbished the emergency department to include a paediatric
assessment. The emergency department features on the Channel 5 show Casualty
24/7.
Any consultant who is
unable for any reason to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for
the post. If such a person is appointed modification of the job content will be
discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant
colleagues.
The Department for
Acute Medicine at Barnsley Hospital comprises:
48 Bedded Acute Medical Unit (AMU) -
with additional flex capacity to increase to 51
26 Bedded Short Stay Unit (SSU)
Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC) -
12 chairs, 2 trolleys, 4 assessment room, phlebotomy/treatment room.
The post-holder will
have responsibility for Acute Medical patients inclusive of an optional commitment
to the physician General Internal Medicine (GIM) On Call rota (as we move
towards a 12 hour / 7-day AIM cover model).
Junior staffing of
rotas is extremely robust and is supported by Physicians Associates and an
Acute Response Team of ACPs.
If the post holder opts
to join the current GIM On Call rota, when physician of the day, residency is
between 5pm to 8pm (midweek) and then non-resident 8pm to 8am. The AMU is currently serviced by 10 Acute
Physicians (not including this post(s)) with further plans to recruit more
Acute Physicians to cover the day, evenings and weekend work. The advertised
post is that of a whole time or maximum part time Consultant Physician in Acute
Medicine. (Please note the GIM on call
pattern is currently under review and optional if required).
A number of new
initiatives are in development to transform urgent care into a better model for
our patients. Through our triumvirate approach the successful candidate will be
involved in planning and implementing some of these programmes working
alongside medical, nursing and operational management colleagues.
Any consultant who is
unable to work full time will be considered to work part time. If such a person
is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on an
individual basis in consultation with the Clinical Director. The post holder is
responsible to the Clinical Director.
There is considerable
opportunity to assist in the development of new ways of working in response to
the pressures on Emergency Departments and AMUs. There is the potential to
further develop SDEC, speciality in-reach and rapid access follow-up clinics.
The appointee will work
closely with the clinical lead and consultant colleagues to provide a
comprehensive service in Acute Medicine. The AMU is situated in a purpose-built
unit and is part of the Medicine & Urgent Care Clinical Business Unit,
together with the Emergency Department.
