Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist (Glaucoma)

The closing date is 19 May 2025

Job summary

We are excited to recruit a full-time Ophthalmology (Glaucoma) locum consultant to provide excellent care to our patients.

The job plan offers 9 programmed activities to provide direct clinical care (inclusive of associated administration time), and 1 SPA.

The post is fixed term for 6 months and it is anticipated that a substantive appointment will follow.

As well as being an expert in Glaucoma management, the successful candidate will have a broad experience in the management of ophthalmology outpatients and will engage in all aspects of ophthalmology patient pathways, including in a programmed Eye Casualty session.

Supervision and teaching of junior staff will be required as well as administrative responsibilities related to service provision.

The job plan does not currently involve evenings or weekend sessions; however, this may evolve should it suit business needs.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to fulfil the following duties within the agreed job plan:

- Provision and development of exceptional ophthalmology services

- Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and the proper functioning of the department

- Actively participate in clinical governance and audits

- Actively participate in departmental meetings

The Consultant has a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and for the proper functioning of the service, allowing for all appropriate delegation to and training for staff. They are responsible for the day-to-day management of relevant clinics and must ensure that in/outpatient services are covered during planned absences. Participation in episodes of shared care requires the Consultant to provide advice and support to clinicians in other subspecialties regarding patients who may have a combination of ocular problems.

The appointee will be expected to comply with all relevant Trust policies relating to administration of patient care.

About us

Under the leadership of our Chair Jacqui Smith and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, we provide care for the residents of three of the most diverse London boroughs. More than half of our 7,500 strong workforce are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.

Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London.

As we recover from Covid-19, we're proud to be leading the way nationally in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The pandemic provided the drive for our teams to innovate and change.

We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and our performance against the four-hour emergency access standard remains challenged, in comparison to many other London trusts.

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We're also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.
