Job summary
This is a 10 PA post for a Consultant Breast Surgeon to work in the Surgical Care Group at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals Trust. The post will be based at King George Hospital and Queen's Hospital and involve cross-site working. The successful applicant will support the current delivery of breast surgery services.
The aim of the Surgical Care Group is to become a world leader in the field of surgical management through innovation, evidence based safe and effective patient care and the successful applicant must therefore have the pre-requisite procedural and leadership skills as well as teamwork, drive and ambition to succeed in achieving these goals.
The General Surgery department is dynamic, enthusiastic, and forward looking with a holistic patient centered outlook providing general surgery. The department consists of General Surgery, Vascular, Colorectal, Specialist Surgery, ENT, Maxillofacial, Ophthalmology, Head & Neck, Breast surgery (including onco-plastic), vascular and Acute Emergency Surgical services.
Main duties of the job
Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Breast Surgeon. This is an opportunity to join a busy, dynamic multidisciplinary team to help us improve the service that we provide to our population.
Our General Surgery service is delivered at both King George and Queen's Hospitals. There is one general surgery ward at King George Hospital and three wards at Queen's Hospital. The service provides a comprehensive range of General and Vascular Surgery services delivered by 32 Consultants. General surgery has an elective bed base at both sites and a dedicated 24 hour on call team on both sites to cope with the Emergency demand that presents through either Emergency Department.
The appointee will join the existing team to provide specialist care to this growing population of patients and raise departmental profiles through teaching and education.
About us
We provide care for the residents of three diverse London boroughs. Most of our 7,800 permanent staff live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge and the majority are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.
Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals and we operate from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London - more than 300,000 people visited our A&Es in 2023. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Community Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic.
We're pleased to be leading the way in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The Elective Surgical Hub at King George Hospital is one of eight to be accredited as part of a national scheme; the Care Quality Commission has raised the ratings forurgent and emergency careat Queen's and King George hospitals; anddata released by NHS Englandshowed that the Trust was the most improved in 2023 for reducing waits for emergency care.
We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We're also part of the North East London Cancer Alliance.
