The Role
We are looking to appoint enthusiastic, motivated consultants to our Emergency Medicine team. These appointments will join as part of a significant expansion in our consultant, medical and nursing workforce, an investment which is integral to our Urgent and Emergency Care Improvement Program.
We would particularly encourage applications from Consultants with an interest in quality improvement, medical education, POCUS or resuscitation.
We would welcome enquiries from consultants with an interest in cross specialty roles for example Emergency Medicine with Intensive Care or Acute Medicine.
The Emergency Medicine Consultant Team Provides 24/7 care. The post is re-numerated in line with the 2003 consultant contract with a locally agreed uplift for night working. The trust offers a generous Recruitment and Retention Supplement details of which can be gained on enquiry.
Applicants should be on the GMC specialist register for Emergency Medicine or overseas equivalent or be within 6 months of being eligible for registration.
Our Emergency Departments
Queens Hospital in Romford is a modern DGH also providing regional specialist services in Neurosurgery and Stroke.King George Hospital in Ilford provides DGH services to our local population in a recently refurbished modern emergency department environment.
Main duties of the job
In combination our Emergency Department care for in excess of 180,000 type one patients per year through well-appointed Resuscitation rooms, Majors Areas, Emergency Decision Unit/SDECs and dedicated Children's Emergency Departments on both sites. Both departments are supported by on-site Urgent Treatment Centres allowing the Emergency Departments to focus on patients presenting with emergency needs.
Our Improvement Program
Investing in Facilities
BHRUT has invested £10,000,000 in upgrading facilities at our two Emergency Departments, providing improved staff facilities and patient care areas. We are developing a five year plan with further investment to deliver emergency care in world class facilities within an "Urgent and Emergency Care Village."
Investing in Systems
Our trust is working with our ambulance services, urgent care providers, neighbouring trusts, and our commissioners to develop systems to ensure the right patient is seen in the right place at the right time, leaving the Emergency Department free to deal with Emergencies.

Our new posts are designed with head room to provide and deliver high quality training and development. Whether it be consultant shifts dedicated to the shop floor clinical educator role, the budget to support Masters and Diplomas for our middle grades, or simply ensuring all rotas have dedicated education and development time, our programmes are committed to ensuring our team get the training and development they need.
BHRUT is working in collaboration with Barts Health to provide healthcare across North East London. The collaborative will be the largest deliverer of emergency care in the country and the largest employer of emergency care staff, nursing and medical, nationally.
A major goal of our collaboration is to develop an Academy of Emergency Care Training. The vision for the Academy is that it will deliver world class training for our own staff as well as providing courses for emergency health care professionals nationally and worldwide.
Investing in People
BHRUT is investing in the Emergency Care workforce with a significant expansion of the medical and nursing team. The aim is to provide a well-supported consultant team with the time and resources to deliver high quality, safe emergency care for our patients and training, development, and supervision for our team. All in all BHRUT is planning to invest an additional £5,000,000 in the Emergency Care Medical and nursing teams including this post.
