Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Head of Nursing for Neurosciences within the Medicine Care Group at BHRU. The is a senior clinical leadership position reporting the Director of Nursing.

The overriding job purpose is to provide expert nursing leadership across all Neurosciences services, and the development of quality & clinical assurance for the Medical Triumvirate. This requires high calibre leadership and initiative to support multi -professional teams in delivering high-quality care in line the clinical, nursing, and business strategies.

You will be expected to use expert knowledge of quality care combined with a robust knowledge of the health and care service and working in collaboration with relevant colleagues. The post is pivotal in ensuring robust professional leadership for nursing, midwifery and AHP staff, patient safety patient experience and support the delivery of national priorities for Stroke and relevant national strategies.

You will lead on initiatives identified by the Director of Nursing, and through personal action and professional leadership shape and develop a culture of continuous improvements that benefits patients.

You will take part in Care Group and Trust on call rotas and deputise for the Director of Nursing. They may lead or support initiatives set out by the Chief Nursing Officer in relation to the Nursing and Midwifery agenda.

Main duties of the job

The Head of Nursing role is a senior nursing role providing leadership and direction to nursing staff within a designated directorate or site, consisting of multiple specialties located across Queen's and King George Hospitals, and other satellite sites.

Recognising and celebrating our workforce demographics the post holder will be responsible for ensuring the directorate operates in an inclusive and transparent way. Improving and maintaining staff experience within the directorate is a key requirement for this role.

With guidance and direction from the Clinical Group triumvirate the postholder with contribute and implement Clinical Group strategy. This will include working with the Chief Nurse, Senior Nurses and Heads of Therapy Services to support, influence and guide the development and delivery of excellent nursing care.

The post holder will be the professional accountable nursing leader across the directorate or site ensuring appropriate structures are in place to support and inspire staff at all levels encouraging innovation, excellence and succession planning.

The postholder will support the Clinical Group Director of Nursing / Midwifery /Healthcare Professionals and others in providing strategic and inspirational leadership that will create a caring, fair and open culture in line with our Trust values.

Under the leadership of our Chair Jacqui Smith and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, we provide care for the residents of three of the most diverse London boroughs. Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London.

As we recover from Covid-19, we're proud to be leading the way nationally in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The pandemic provided the drive forour teams to innovate and change.

We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and our performance against the four-hour emergency access standard remains challenged, in comparison to many other London trusts.

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We're also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.
