Job summary
Chief Operating Officer, Barking Havering and Redbridge University Hospital NHS Trust
We are looking for an exceptional operational leader to join us as COO at BHRUT.
The successful candidate will be committed to high quality patient care, have an appetite for hard work in challenging circumstances and a detailed understanding of operational improvement in planned and emergency care. Most importantly you will be able to demonstrate delivery through compassionate leadership.
You will be joining a dynamic, patient-focused leadership team who will support you as we turn around our challenging Type 1 A&E performance, while building on our reputation for innovation and success in planned care.
We are delivering on national targets for planned care recovery and diagnostics and we are making huge improvements in our cancer waiting times. A&E is a long-standing problem in our part of North East London, but we know what is wrong with flow in our hospitals and know what needs doing to fix it. Changes we have made in recent months are setting us on a path to deliver 76% all-type performance this year. We need a COO who can help us get there.
Main duties of the job
As an Executive Director and full member of the Trust Board, you will make a significant contribution to the development and delivery of the Trust's strategy, with a focus on patient outcomes, quality, performance and financial sustainability.
Core to the role is the demonstration of leadership qualities and behaviours that promote inclusion and diversity, the Trust's values and be a role model for staff and our patients. You will be an ambassador for the Trust and the post holder will work with the Trust Board to create an inclusive environment that supports and develops our exceptional workforce.
This is a role which will benefit from the insights and experience of a proven leader working within the NHS who is committed to the challenges and opportunities of working in North East London.
We work in a system where people tend to rely on the acute hospital for care that is delivered in primary and community care settings elsewhere in North East London. Our COO needs to be able to help us improve flow inside our hospitals, while also building good relationships with partners to make improvements to the system in which we work.
We are working in collaboration with Barts Health to deliver better outcomes for patients across North East London, with a focus on workforce, planned care, and infrastructure, and on delivering higher quality patient pathways for specialist and urgent care. The COO will work alongside colleagues at Barts to help us succeed.
About us
Under the leadership of our Chair, Jacqui Smith and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive we provide care for the residents of three diverse London boroughs. More than half of our 7,500 strong workforce are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.
Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic and Harold Wood Polyclinic.
As we recover from Covid-19, we're proud to be leading the way in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The pandemic provided the drive for our teams to innovate and change.
We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and this will be one of the many benefits of our closer collaboration with Barts Health. Working with them and with all our partners across north east London, we will find a sustainable solution to enhance patient care.
We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We're also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.
