Job summary
The Radiotherapy Physics department at Queen's Hospital in Romford is looking for an imaginative Band 8b consultant radiotherapy physicist to lead on all aspects of the production of high-quality treatment plans. Leading on service development and implementation of innovative techniques is a vital part of this role, working in an enthusiastic multi-disciplinary environment with state-of-the-art equipment.
The Radiotherapy department at Queen's Hospital is a well-equipped centre treating patients from across East London and Essex. External beam radiotherapy is delivered on Varian Halcyon, Edge, and Ethos Therapy linacs. The department was the first in the country to treat patients with Halcyon, and to treat patients with on-line adaptive radiotherapy with Ethos. The Edge treatment machine is multimodality, with high-definition MLC, 4D-CBCT, 6 DoF couch, and is HyperArc-enabled. The department also has an Xstrahl Superficial unit. Treatment Planning is done on Eclipse 15.6 (with RapidPlan & MCO licences) and in Ethos, on scans from the department's Siemens 64-slice CT scanner which has respiratory gating enabled. The department fully supports a wide range of clinical trials, and has an excellent selection of QA devices and software. The department embraces and welcomes change, and we are committed to introducing the latest treatment techniques and equipment: current areas of development include RapidPlan, stereotactic treatments and on-line adaptive treatment techniques.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will be responsible for the production of all the accuracy and clinical suitability of radiotherapy treatment plans and calculations for external beam radiotherapy at Queen's Hospital, managing the treatment planning team and, with senior colleagues, managing physicists within the department. Leading service improvement and the development of treatment techniques is a key responsibility, as is collaboration with radiotherapy vendors. Involvement in routine QA, management of the department's Aria system, the department's on-line adaptive radiotherapy service, training of trainees and other members of staff, and maintaining the department's Quality System, are also expected as required.
The Trust has Flexible Working and Agile Working policies offering potential for non-standard hours and working from home, provided that the demands of the service can be met.
Interested candidates can arrange an on-site visit to the department or discuss enquiries via phone, email or virtual meeting.

As we recover from Covid-19, we're proud to be leading the way in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The pandemic provided the drive for our teams to innovate and change.
We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and this will be one of the many benefits of our closer collaboration with Barts Health. Working with them and with all our partners across north east London, we will find a sustainable solution to enhance patient care.
