Job summary
Perform a broad and demanding range of scientific work requiring a high degree of individual skill in routine areas of Radiotherapy Physics and Quality Assurance including assisting with the commissioning of new radiotherapy equipment and software.
Main duties of the job
The Radiotherapy Physics department at Queen's Hospital in Romford is seeking to fill two Band 7 radiotherapy physicist posts, taking part in all aspects of physics provision for radiotherapy. We are expecting state-registered clinical scientists to fill this post, but would consider candidates who are close to being state-registered, who would be appointed at a lower grade.
The Radiotherapy department at Queen's Hospital is a well-equipped centre treating patients from across East London and Essex. External beam radiotherapy is delivered on Varian Halcyon, Edge, and Ethos Therapy linacs. The department was the first in the country to treat patients with Halcyon, and to treat patients with on-line adaptive radiotherapy with Ethos. The Edge treatment machine is multimodality, with high-definition MLC, 4D-CBCT, 6 DoF couch, and is HyperArc-enabled. The department also has an Xstrahl Superficial & Orthovoltage unit.
Treatment Planning is done on Eclipse 15.6 (with RapidPlan and MCO licences) and in Ethos, on scans from the department's Siemens 64-slice CT scanner which has respiratory gating enabled. The department fully supports a wide range of clinical trials, and has an excellent selection of QA devices and software. The department embraces and welcomes change, and we are committed to introducing the latest treatment techniques as well as the latest equipment: current areas of development include RapidPlan, stereotactic treatments and on-line adaptive treatment techniques.
About us
Under the leadership of our Chair, Jacqui Smith and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive we provide care for the residents of three diverse London boroughs. More than half of our 7,500 strong workforce are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.
Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic and Harold Wood Polyclinic.
As we recover from Covid-19, we're proud to be leading the way in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The pandemic provided the drive for our teams to innovate and change.
We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and this will be one of the many benefits of our closer collaboration with BARTS Health. Working with them and with all our partners across north east London, we will find a sustainable solution to enhance patient care.
We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We're also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.
