Job summary
This neurosurgical skull base fellowship is a one year training program designed to prepare individuals for successful careers in cranial neurosurgery. This fellowship is fully approved by the Royal College of Surgeons and is designed between two busy skull base and pituitary surgery units at Queen's Hospital Romford and Royal London Hospital. Both Skull Base and Pituitary surgery units offer a high-volume tertiary clinical experience covering all aspects of advanced skull base and pituitary surgery. This fellowship is aimed at senior trainees or post CCT neurosurgeons seeking to gain further experience in microsurgical and endoscopic complex skull base surgery. Successful candidate will join a team of Four skull base and pituitary surgery consultants with an extensive exposure to complex transcranial microsurgical approaches, advanced endoscopic endonasal surgery as well as stereotactic radiosurgery. Most cases are managed in a multidisciplinary fashion in conjunction with experienced colleagues from radiation neuro oncology, ENT, oculoplastic surgery, endocrinology. There exist a strong relationship with the ENT subspecialties - neuro-otology, rhinology, and head and neck oncology. The fellow will take part in the on call with the oncall being out of hours and daytime protected for skull base related activities. The fellow will be expected to take part in most skull base cases across two sites for one year.
Main duties of the job
The fellow will participate in pre-operative assessment of patients, decision making in an MDT fashion, microsurgical and endoscopic skull base operations, post-operative care and clinic follow up of skull base and pituitary patients. Fellow will be supported and encouraged to undertake clinical outcome research during the fellowship.
BHRUT is one of the largest Associate Teaching Hospitals, providing acute care for over 700,000 people from across 2 main sites - Queens and King George Hospitals, as well as peripheral sites at Barking, Dagenham and Brentwood. We have a strong commitment to teaching trainees. We are a major Neurosciences centre, and are undergoing significant further development as a tertiary referral centre for North East London and Essex, including additional critical care capacity.
The Trust is in an excellent location, close to Central London and well situated in the South East. As well as all the advantages of being close to the city, the Trust has on-site nursery facilities at Queen's and King George Hospital sites.
