This is an excellent opportunity for a GMC registered doctor with an interest in medical education to gain experience in medical education leadership and delivery.

The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust is a specialist Neuroscience hospital based in Liverpool. We have been twice rated CQC Outstanding and currently hold Gold industry standard for Investors in People, and Investors in People Health and Wellbeing. Recently the Trust was designated a University Hospital site.

We are recruiting a Clinical Education Fellow to join the Undergraduate Clinical Education faculty for 12 months from August 2024 This is a full time position, Mon-Fri, 40 hours per week; post holders will work (60/40) between education activities and service work as part of the clinical team. There will be opportunity to join the on-call rota if desired.

Applicants will have demonstrable clinical experience in Neurology or Neurosurgery and an enthusiasm for developing skills in clinical teaching and assessment. If you meet this criteria, we would welcome your application.

Main duties of the job

Postholder will work under the guidance of the senior Education clinical leads to design and deliver the Year 4 Undergraduate Neuroscience module, providing Neurology teaching, simulation, and clinical skills training.

We provide local medical schools with all aspects of Neuroscience Undergraduate teaching and practical clinical skills education. The successful candidates will be based at WCFT and will be expected to engage with the HEIs when appropriate.

This post is ideal for someone who has practical knowledge of Neurology/Neurosurgery and is interested in a career in medical education and academic medicine. It would provide useful experience prior to undertaking a period of research or applying for a more senior post. The post holder should have completed their general professional training as a Core Trainee and have achieved MRCP/MRCS (UK) or equivalent and be a member of the relevant Royal College.

The successful applicant will join the Medical Education team at the Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust to support the delivery of Neurology placement teaching, simulation and clinical skills training.

Medical Education at the Walton Centre is regarded as a high quality, high performing service. It is frequently evaluated as excellent by learners in both the postgraduate GMC NTS and local Medical School undergraduate placement surveys. To support increasing learner numbers and to maintain the high-quality learner experience, significant Trust investment has been made to the Medical Education clinical faculty. The Medical Education Clinical Fellow will be a key member of this team.

Job summary:

The goal of Medical Education team at the trust is to enable both the educational objectives of affiliated undergraduate degree programmes, as well as WCFT strategic workforce objectives by facilitating the education and progression of medical learners.

The Medical Education Fellow post will enhance undergraduate medical student educational experience and support the delivery of Neurology/Neurosurgery teaching, simulation and clinical skills training as part of the undergraduate programme.

Under the guidance of the Director of Medical Education / Clinical Sub Dean the post-holder will lead on the organization of Neurology/Neurosurgery placement teaching, supported by the education office at the Trust. There will be an expectation for the post holder to participate in ongoing education quality improvement and demonstrate a dynamic approach to education delivery.

It is expected the post holder will act as a conduit between student cohorts and education faculty, engaging with students to provide appropriate pastoral support working with consultant supervisors to reinforce student experience.

The post holder will co-ordinate students across all WCFT services, working with a diverse workforce to ensure students are able to achieve their learning objectives. An ability to influence and strong communication skills will be essential.

A minimum of 60% of the postholders time will be spent on undergraduate Neurology teaching activities.

40% of the postholders time can be for clinical work to develop the individuals career.

The post holder should have completed their General Professional Training as a Core Trainee and have achieved MRCP/MRCS (UK) or equivalent and be a member of the relevant Royal College.

An interest in undergraduate medical education and an enthusiasm for developing skills in clinical teaching and assessment are essential requirements of the post.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Work with senior education medical faculty to develop, coordinate, implement and evaluate Neuro undergraduate placements.

Support placement coordination for Year 4 block with supervision from CSD and supported by education office, lead on allocated work streams as required

Manage organization of timetabled sessions; work with admin team to implement. Where Standard Operating Processes are in place make sure to routinely evaluate efficacy, in context of ongoing environmental changes e.g., COVID.

Work with medical education leads to ensure good education governance is observed, contribute to development/ maintenance of internal evaluation and quality assurance processes

Develop and maintain understanding of external HEI evaluation systems, work with external stakeholders were required to implement recommendations

Contribute to production and analysis of internal and external evaluation data, identify relevant themes and trends.

Under guidance of CSD support quality interventions were need arises

Provide reports and updates to the undergraduate working group, make recommendations and contribute to ongoing action plan progress

Build effective relationships with departmental educational supervisors, actively embed Medical Education Clinical Fellow role within wider education faculty.

Lead on development of inter-professional learning - support and facilitate medical student place within clinical areas by raising awareness of learning needs with other medical and non-medical colleagues

Actively build open communication channels to engage with students

Proactively look for novel ways to enhance learning opportunities for students.

Work as part of the junior doctor Neurology clinical rota (there will be opportunity to join the oncall rota if desired)
