Clinical Nurse Specialist for Neuro Oncology and Skull Base

Job summary

The post holder will play a key role in the neuro oncology and skull base multidisciplinary teams to deliver high quality care to patients. The clinical nurse specialist will be an experienced, registered nurse.They will have a role in the co-ordination and day to day management of brain and CNS tumor patients undergoing surgery to ensure a high standard of service provision. The post holder will provide an information resource, counselling, education and practical support for patients, their families and healthcare professionals.They will work across organisational boundaries and with primary care to ensure a seamless service from diagnosis and throughout the surgical pathway and referring to another speciality treatment centre or discharging of patients.The post holder will be required to foster good working relationships and communicate effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team and service users to ensure the delivery of high standards of care.The post holder will engage in discussions in multidisciplinary team meetings, where appropriate will present patients, acting as an advocate for all patients with a diagnosis of brain tumours and contributing to adult services where appropriate.They will provide a highly developed specialist knowledge underpinned by theory and experience as per the NICE guidelines.Act in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Conduct.

Main duties of the job

o Perform comprehensive assessment of patient needs, plan, implement and evaluate care delivery according to changing healthcare provision.o Collect, collate, evaluate and report clinical information, maintaining accurate patient and nursing records.o Act as an advocate for individual patients; involve patients and relatives in the planning and delivery of care as well as evaluating the effectiveness of interventions and treatment protocols.o Communicating highly sensitive and complex information to patients and carers using excellent advanced communication skills and expertise.o To undertake Health Needs Assessments on all patients and generate an personalised care plan addressing their needs.o Work alongside other health professional and medical colleagues in oncology, ENT, endocrine, palliative care, radiology and pathology to ensure continuity of care is optimised.o To deliver nurse led clinics as part of the patient pathway which may involve MRI results, symptom management, wound assessment, per-operative advice and support.o Demonstrate professionalism, politeness, courtesy and sensitivity in providing compassionate care for patients, visitors/relatives and colleagues.o When required attend (on MS Teams or Face-to-Face) the daily neurosurgical meeting to identify oncology and skull base referrals and check the Orion system for any additional urgent tumour referrals.o Join the daily ward rounds to identify and support post-operative patients.
