Trust Clinical Fellow in Neurosurgery - Spinal

Job summary

The Post is for 6 months, with effect from August 2024. The post holder will be working with the complex spinal teams. Time will be allocated for research and teaching. It is expected that the post-holder will act as a senior registrar, provide leadership and support for other trainees, will be expected to participate in research projects and audits, with support in job description to produce peer reviewed papers and audits.

WCFT is currently the regional lead for malignant spinal disease and spinal injuries with referrals from Cheshire/ Merseyside and North Wales hospitals.

The spinal teams at WCFT deal with all aspects of spinal disorders: spinal deformity surgery including anterior and posterior approaches, surgery for spinal tumours, spinal trauma and infections, surgery for congenital spinal disorders, tethered cord and chiari malformations. All aspects of spinal work are covered, from emergency to elective work.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of the Walton Centre Spinal Fellowship is to enable a senior trainee with a major interest in developing a career in spinal surgery to have the opportunity to work in close liaison with Neurosurgical and Orthopaedic spinal Consultants who have specific interests in spinal disorders. The post is designed for trainees (orthopaedic or neurosurgical background) who wishes to pursue a career in Complex (Deformity) spinal surgery.

The Fellow will be involved in all aspects of inpatient and outpatient care of patients with spinal disorders under the direct supervision of the Consultant Spinal Surgeons. He/she will be expected to participate in outpatient clinics, operating lists involving spinal surgery and to be involved in the ward duties for those patients with spinal disorders. In addition, he/she will be expected to take a regular part in the ongoing teaching programme and there will be a definite commitment to becoming involved in research projects. The Fellow will be encouraged to attend at least one recommended spinal meeting during the tenure of his/her appointment and to take advantage of courses run both nationally and internationally.

The fellow will take part in the middle grade on-call rota covering the Walton Centre.
