Main duties of the job

The Trust manages over 8,100 deliveries per annum and houses the regional neonatal intensive care unit and the regional Foetal Medicine Centre.

As an increasing proportion of the deliveries are of a high-risk category, there is, as a consequence, a high rate of caesarean sections with an increasing need for High Dependency facilities for the mothers.

Much of the high dependency work is undertaken and supervised by the anaesthetists and, as is to be expected, we also provide a comprehensive range of pre; intra; and post-delivery obstetric anaesthetic and regional analgesia services.

Gynaecological and Reproductive Medicine surgery takes place in a suite of 5 operating theatres (each with its own anaesthetic room) equipped with a large forward waiting area, and a ten-bed recovery area. All areas of the suite are fully equipped with up-to-date anaesthetic and monitoring facilities, and a computer-based theatre management system is installed with full electronic prescribing as well as electronic anaesthetic record system. In addition to the usual range of gynaecology, an increasing number of major oncology cases take place and the hospital is the Regional Centre for Gynaecological Oncology. There are five full-time oncological surgeons.
