Senior Healthcare Support Worker, Clatterbridge Cancer Centre Liverpool Clinical Decision Unit/Hotline

The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK's leading providers of non-surgical cancer treatment, caring for a population of 2.4 million people across Cheshire & Merseyside, North Wales, the Isle of Man and parts of Lancashire.
Our flagship specialist cancer hospital was opened in central Liverpool in June 2020, supported by our hospital on the Clatterbridge Health Park in Wirral providing outpatient cancer treatment and supportive care.
Together, working across three sites and operating specialist chemotherapy clinics in four of Merseyside's district hospitals, we are able to deliver a comprehensive range of inpatient care, advanced radiotherapy, chemotherapy and other systemic anti-cancer therapies including gene therapies and immunotherapies. We also deliver a pioneering Treatment at Home and Work service; are the only facility in the UK providing low-energy proton beam therapy to treat rare eye cancers and host the region's Teenage and Young Adult Unit, (supported by the Teenage Cancer Trust).

About us
CDU is a 10 bedded unit running Monday to Friday with an ambulatory clinic on Saturday and Sunday. Our 24 hour Hotline Triage telephone advice line is a 24 hour a day, 7 day service. On CDU we care for patients who are experiencing side effects as a result of systemic anti-cancer treatments and radiotherapy treatment that require a medical assessment and possible admission to CCCL. The Unit accepts patients from both Solid Tumour and Haematological malignancy groups
The unit accepts patients requiring admission for managament of side effects of systemic anti-cancer treatments and/or radiotherapy and symptom management.Patients requiring artificial airway management are also nursed on the Unit.

Maintain effective communication with the registered Nurse regarding issues relating to assigned duties, promptly reporting areas of concern.Maintain health working relationships with the multi professional ream, patient and relatives.Contribute to the effectiveness of inter-agency working as appropriate.Documentation in patients nursing records of any care given.
Undertake the trust Corporate and Directorate specific Induction and competency programmes appropriate to the role.Take responsibility for undertaking own mandatory training and updates as required.Undertake and complete specified NVQ training at level 3 and/or equivalent competency programmes relevant to directorate needs and own role.Complete specialist training required that allows Health care to be delivered to the patient through new ways of working.Take responsibility in collaboration with line manager within personal development planning process for identifying own learning and development needs within the knowledge and skillsframework (KSF).Demonstrate skills and activities to others in similar roles and make contribution as a team member to the training of other Health care assistants and supervising learners.Participate in clinical supervision and act as a mentor for those in a similar role.
Participate in the orientation, instruction of less experienced staff.Comply with all Trust policies in relation to all aspects of practice.Act at all times in a manner that upholds the reputation of the Trust and safeguards the wellbeing and dignity of patients and their relatives
Assist the registered Nurse by developing care plans, assessing and documenting care, providing verbal and written reports in an effective and safe manner.Assist with essential nursing care and anticipate patient dependency and to be proactive in assisting nursing staff with supervision as necessary.Carry out designated clerical duties as delegated by the Ward Manager/Deputy Ward manager or registered Nurse. To be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and provide cover for any area specifiedwithin the ICD.Lead on patient exit survey and liaise with Ward manager and PALS manager.Able to prioritise time and tasks.Undertake a range of clerical duties in the absence of or in support of the Ward Clerk to ensure a smooth running service, this may involve:Reception/telephone dutiesBasic computer skillsFilingReport faulty equipment to the relevant department.Monitor and maintain adequate stock levels of stationary, ward provisions.
Participates in all aspects of patient care with particular attention to personal hygiene and grooming.Provision of patients toileting needs, ensuring privacy and dignity is maintained.Support of patients in managing incontinence and promotion of continence.The recording of patients fluid intake and output using fluid balance charts.Preparation and serving of patients meals, drinks and snacks. Assisting/feeding patients as necessary.The recording of patients dietary intake when indicated in the patients plan of care.Enable patients to maintain/improve their mobility by use of exercise and mobility appliances.Assist in the prevention of pressure ulcer development as directed by the Registered nurse in conjunction with the patients care plan.Obtaining samples from patients for ward or laboratory testing.
Be competent in the skills of venepuncture and cannulation.
Care and management of Central venous access devices such as PICC's, PORT's and Hickman Lines.Removal of cannulae, Urinary catheters and nasogastric tubes.Deliver unsupervised specified care and intervention as prescribed by an appropriate registered health care professional in accordance to agreed trust and Directorate policies, procedures and protocols.Assist and support care delivery by only undertaking delegated work that is within own limitations, level of competence, skill and training.Carry out duties consistent with individual patient wishes, maintaining privacy, dignity and recognising cultural diversity and needs.Contribute to the overall effectiveness of care delivered by the health care team and those benefits the patients experience.To be responsible for ensuring bed spaces for admission, transfer and discharges to the ward are prepared, tidy and for ensuring that water jugs and cups are providedEnsure patients are aware of the ward layout and routine.To act as a chaperone as required in all clinical settings.
Escort/transfer patients to other areas of the hospital as appropriate.Prepare and maintain environments for clinical treatments and investigations.Prepare patients for treatments, investigations or procedures including offering support, answering questions appropriate to own knowledge/experience and assisting in their recovery.Collection of blood products from the laboratory.Assist Registered Nurse in performing last offices.Initiate basic life support techniques as appropriate and provides assistance to the registered nurse as required in prolonged resuscitation situations.Ensure due regard is given to customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients and carer's.
