About us
The HPB Service
The HPB oncology service is currently delivered by 3 substantive Consultants who work in an integrated team structure. Medical support is provided periodically by a Clinical Fellow, rotating Specialty doctors and a Physician Associate. There are also two Advanced Nurse Practitioners and two Clinical Nurse Specialists within the team.
The HPB service is one of the largest nationally, providing specialist oncological treatment for hepato-pancreato-biliary (including neuroendocrine) malignancies for the Merseyside/ Cheshire region of England and the Isle of Man (population ~ 2.4 million). Some referrals are also received from North Wales for rare HPB cancers (which includes hepatocellular carcinoma and small intestinal carcinoma) and neuroendocrine tumours as well as nationally for participation in clinical trials. The team adopts an evidence-based approach to patient management. Furthermore ~ 15% of referrals are enrolled onto interventional clinical trials.
The HPB oncology service within the stand-alone cancer centre links into three regional cancer multi-disciplinary teams, which are some of the largest nationally: The Pancreas, Advanced Liver and Neuroendocrine MDTs. Many national trials to improve systemic treatment of pancreatic cancer have been led from the Pancreatic MDT.
