Job summary

The Project Manager is an exciting opportunity that will provide leadership and project management skills to enable system wide change to support delivery of Cancer Alliance objectives and priorities identified within NHS England's Long Term Plan and the local cancer delivery plan. The breadth of the Cancer Alliance programme covers the whole pathway including screening and early diagnosis, personalised care and sustainable operational performance.

The Project Manager will be responsible for the planning, implementation and delivery of key complex projects across organisations in all sectors across Cheshire and Merseyside. The post holder will support a team of project and specialist staff and line manage project support staff within the Cancer Alliance team, supporting delivery of transformation projects funded by the National Cancer Programme.

The post holder will represent the Cancer Alliance in various Cheshire and Merseyside wide forums. They will work with colleagues at all levels including senior clinicians, executives, project managers and teams across Cheshire and Merseyside and act in an autonomous capacity.

Main duties of the job

The role will require developed project management skills and close working with external partners including providers, commissioners, patients and carers to deliver programme objectives in accordance with the aims and ambitions of the Cancer Alliance. This requires a level of political awareness, personal influence and skill. The role requires someone with high levels of self-motivation and an ability to determine the best approach to their workload.

The Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance is one of 19 across England and covers a population of 2.4 million. Its footprint aligns with the Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership. The Cancer Alliance is now in its fourth year and continues to build on its success in designing and mobilising major transformation projects spanning the whole patient pathway. This success is underpinned by excellent clinical leadership and a history of strong collaborative working across organisations in Cheshire and Merseyside.

The Cancer Alliance is hosted by The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust and the CEO is the Senior Responsible Owner/Executive Lead for Cancer within the Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership.

  • Setting up and planning of the project(s) including project steering groups, project assurance function, project teams, project documentation using the CA programme management documentation and recognised project management methodologies

  • Ensure that the project reporting adheres to the CA programme governance framework

  • Evidence of continuing professional development

  • Recognised management qualification e.g. Diploma
  • PRINCE 2 qualification or equivalent

Knowledge & Expertise

  • Effectively utilise a range of IT office systems including MS Project, PowerPoint, Word, spreadsheets and web browser technologies
  • Demonstrable ability to transfer skill to others and communicate effectively with stakeholders
  • Knowledge of the latest national cancer policy agenda and the opportunities for improvement in patient care presented by it
  • Planning, organising workload to meet deadlines including rapid prioritisation of tasks
  • Knowledge and experience of project and change management

Desirable

  • Knowledge of cancer services and the cancer improvement agenda
  • Knowledge of NHS organisations and structures and how this impacts on cross-organisational project delivery
