Consultant in Palliative Medicine- The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust
This is a substantive term 0.8 WTE NHS post as a Consultant in Palliative Medicine (8 PA) at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre (CCC) and at CCC affiliated services located at sector hubs. The post holder will join the existing Consultants in Palliative Medicine and the Specialist Palliative Care Team.
The post holder will work as part of our award winning Enhanced Supportive Care (ESC) service which aims to deliver holsitic support to patients early from the point of diagnosis through their treatment journey and improve patient safety and experience. In addition, this new post allows the palliative care team consultants to begin to act as responsible clinicians- allowing patients requiring symptom control to be admitted under a named palliative care consultant. This is aimed to improve the delivery of complex care to patients in a timely manner when they are admitted for symptom control, and deliver dedicated inpatient support to our patients on a larger scale.
As well as clinical opportunities, this post has the scope for developing education and research prioritised within palliative and supportive care in line with our 5 year strategy.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be based at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre but may be expected to work at an additional sector hub as the service develops. In the event that travel to another sector hub is required, travel time will be counted as DCC. They will be expected to ensure that clinical services are developed in accordance with specialist palliative care practice.
They will have clinical responsibility for providing medical advice to patients referred to the Specialist Palliative Care service at CCC and will promote multi-professional team working within the service. During periods of ward cover, they will be responsible for reviewing and assessing patients both independently and with Clinical Nurse Specialists, undertaking holistic assessments and making appropriate clinical recommendations to the oncology team and other teams involved in the patient's care. The poster holder will also be expected to act as responsible clinician for some patients admitted for symptom control to the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and participate in post-take reviews of acute admissions to aid in selecting appropriate patients to be admitted under SPCT.
They will provide expertise and specialist palliative care advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to patients' treatment.
