Specialist Pharmacist - Surgery

Job summary

This post supports the Lead Pharmacist for Surgery in the provision of a clinical pharmacy service in the perioperative setting The post holder provides advice to the surgical directorates and works on behalf of pharmacy to support perioperative management. The pharmacist works alongside other members of the multidisciplinary team, including consultants, junior doctors, advanced surgical practitioners and a range of specialist nurses, specialist pharmacists, junior pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to provide a robust clinical service.

Main duties of the job

Providing a core clinical pharmacy service to surgical wards and patients within the perioperative setting in line with the Trust's clinical pharmacy standards.

Ensuring high quality, patient centred, and cost effective pharmaceutical care is provided for the patients from pre-assessment to admission, during the inpatient stay and right through to the successful discharge from hospital. This includes the transfer of key information on to the patient's primary care providers when appropriate.

Actively providing medicines information and medication counselling to health care professionals, patients and/or carers, with an awareness of current trends and up to date research in the specialist area(s)

Working with multiprofessional teams to produce, and review, medication guidelines that promote rational, economical and evidence based prescribing; with appropriate monitoring practice to ensure policies and guidelines are adhered to.

Working with relevant staff to participate in required, and clinically appropriate, audits, research and risk management strategies.

  • oMasters Degree in Pharmacy or equivalent
  • oRegistered pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • oPost-Graduate Diploma in clinical pharmacy (or equivalent) OR working towards

Desirable

  • oRegistered Independent Prescriber (or willing to train)
  • oMember of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society
  • oMember of UK clinical pharmacy association (UKCPA)

Experience

Essential

  • oSignificant post registration experience covering a range of specialties
  • oExperience as a clinical pharmacist.
  • oClinical supervision of junior staff
  • oHave evidence demonstrating competencies that meet the RPS Post Registration Foundation Pharmacist Curriculum

Desirable

  • oExperience of providing a clinical pharmacy service in a hospital environment
  • oExperience of deputising for a more senior clinical pharmacist
  • oRPS Core Advanced Curriculum (or equivalent).
  • oClinical Research experience, or willingness to undertake
