Job summary

Royal Cornwall hospital provides pathology services for Cornwall & is currently looking for a motivated Band 6 Biomedical Scientist to become part of the Haematology, Coagulation and Blood Transfusion team. This role will provide support whilst pathology implements a new LIMS system. The Blood Sciences laboratory is due to enter an exciting phase with a new build pathology department future proofing pathology for the next 40 years with a purpose built facility featuring state of the art diagnostic equipment.Our laboratory has full ISO 15189 Accreditation status, and the Transfusion laboratory is fully MHRA compliant. The laboratory is equipped with Abbott Alinity HQ full blood count analysers, Werfen Coagulation TOP analysers, Grifols Erytra blood grouping analysers and access to Sebia capillary electrophoresis for haemoglobinopathy and antenatal sickle cell and thalassaemia screening. The hospital is a Haemostasis Centre with the laboratory undertaking advanced coagulation thrombotic and haemorrhagic investigations.Cornwall offers an amazing lifestyle of outdoor activities, some of the finest beaches in the country and a safe and child friendly environment. Main duties of the job

Our laboratory has full ISO 15189 Accreditation status and the Transfusion laboratory is fully MHRA compliant. The laboratory is equipped with Abbott Alinity full blood count analysers, Werfen Coagulation TOP analysers, Grifols Erytra blood grouping analysers and access to Sebia capillary electrophoresis for haemoglobinopathy and antenatal sickle cell and thalassaemia screening. The hospital is a Haemostasis Centre with the laboratory undertaking advanced coagulation thrombotic and haemorrhagic investigations. We also undertake basic male fertility screening within the department working closely with the Cornwall Centre for Reproductive Medicine.

The main role will be to provide backfill support or direct LIMS support depending on experience during the LIMS implementation project.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will assist the management team delivering a quality and responsive clinical and technical service for the Trust and associated stakeholders and partners, providing professional leadership and line management for the staff.

In conjunction with senior staff, the post holder will assist in identifying service pressures and devising action plans or business cases/plans as appropriate

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the department meets quality targets such as turn-around times and consistency of test results.

Supervise staff, organise, and prioritise workload to meet demanding deadlines.

Ensure lower grades of scientific and scientific support staff comply with Health and Safety protocols as set out in relevant documentation.

Assist in the production of all Standard Operating Procedures for devices, use of equipment, care of the working environment & training protocols.

Engage with the QMS and instil a quality culture.

Engage in the implementation and development of systems & devices.

Engage with the departmental training and competency programme.

Ensure that goods are ordered and monitored in a timely fashion.

Essential

  • IBMS accredited degree
  • Registered with HCPC
  • IBMS Specialist portfolio or equivalent qualification (e.g. MSc in relevant subject)

Desirable

  • IT qualifications
  • Health and safety qualification

Experience

  • Previous experience of working in a NHS laboratory, post HCPC registration1
  • Significant experience of working in a Haematology and Blood Transfusion Department

Desirable

  • Specialist experience in either analytical haematology, coagulation or blood transfusion

Practical and Intellectual skills

  • Able to understand and deal with abnormal results
