Job summary

Do you thrive in a busy, but friendly team environment? If so, we are looking for a bright, efficient individual to join our team at the Royal Cornwall Hospital NHS Trust's Department of Clinical Microbiology.

The Department undertakes microbiological testing for healthcare providers in Mid and West Cornwall.

Main duties of the job

Applicants will have a good basic standard of education, good keyboard skills and an enthusiasm to learn. Previous laboratory or NHS experience would be an advantage, although full training will be given.

The laboratory provides a seven day service, with extended working days. There will be a requirement to work 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Sunday, as agreed. It is anticipated that the post-holder will be expected to work approximately one in four weekends. However, there may be part-time opportunities available.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To work as part of a team providing support in the Administration Section, Clinical Bacteriology, Virology / Serology, Media Production and Specimen Reception.

Preparation of internal quality control material, stock control of reagents and cultre media

The use, maintenance and monitoring of equipment.

Consumable stock (updating, checking, storing, reporting, initial stock control, retrieval).

General cleaning, disinfection and maintenance.

Data entry and interrogation using the laboratory computer system.

Filing and retrieval of specimens, forms etc.

Specimen sorting, matching, labelling and distribution.

Initial specimen preparation (e.g. centrifugation, inoculating swabs sent to the department for bacterial investigation onto agar plates).

Performance of secondary tests and subculture.

To work in a safe manner in accordance with Trust, Directorate and Departmental policies.

Use of mechanised equipment; e.g. using certain analytical systems according to a departmental protocol.

Any other duties appropriate to grade after discussion.

Application and observance of Health and Safety, Security and Confidentiality policies.
