Job summary
This is a long-term (Specialty Doctor) post at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in adult congenital heart disease, echocardiography, and general Cardiology.
The ACHD service in Cornwall is based in the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro, and provides long-term and often life-long care for the increasing number of adults with congenital heart disease.
ThisConsultant-ledservicenow provides specialist care for approximately 500 adults, with approximately 100 new patients referred per annum.
The provision is mainly on an out-patient basis and is run by 3 consultants, 2 are based at the Royal Cornwall Hospital and 1 visiting from the Level 1 Centre at Bristol Heart Institute (BHI).
The post offers weekly ACHD clinics, and weekly ACHD MDTs (run by the ACHD team at BHI).
The post also offers extensive general TOE training and Cardiac Obstetric training.
The post holder will be part of 1:5 or 1:6 Cardiology registrar Rota with no GIM involvement.
Main duties of the job
This post offers extensive opportunities for clinicians wishing to pursue a specialist career in adult congenital heart disease or for general cardiologists wishing to gain greater knowledge of ACHD. The successful applicant will work within the ACHD team to contribute to clinical, administrative, teaching and research activities.
Training will encompass the following key areas required to equip the candidate with the necessary skills to manage adult patients with complex congenital heart disease, namely exposure to a broad range of medical and surgical problems; decision making skills, practical skills including transoesophageal echocardiography and diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterisation; teaching skills; medical audit; research opportunities.
He/she/they will be clinically responsible to the Consultant Cardiologists in the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Unit.
The post is suitable for those with previous ACHD experience, those with limited or no experience in ACHD but would like to gain ACHD/general Cardiology training at a busy District General Hospital, and those with long-term plans to do CESR in Cardiology (This will be supported with a long-term contract from the Cardiology Department and further support from the RCH CESR school).
