Job summary
Are you a General Practitioner who is keen to develop a special interest in the management of breast disease?
We are looking for you to join our enthusiastic, dynamic and forward thinking breast team at the Mermaid Centre, Royal Cornwall NHS Trust.
We are aiming to find another GP to complement our multidisciplinary team, working 2 flexible sessions a week, principally in our triple assessment new patient clinics. There may be other opportunities such as breast cancer follow up or management of menopausal symptoms in breast cancer depending on the candidate.
Our new patient clinics assess over 4500 2WW patients a year with a range of symptoms from breast pain, benign breast disease, gynaecomastia and developmental breast problems as well as cancer. In addition our oncoplastic breast surgical service is at the forefront of innovation and surgical research and offers the latest techniques combining plastic surgery and evidence-based cancer surgery.
Our 7 consultant oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgeons share special interests in revisional breast reconstruction as well as risk reducing surgery, mammoplasty techniques and chest wall perforator flaps.
This has been a very successful initiative with the appointment of a number of GPSI's over the last few years who have enhanced our team enormously, in developing this collaborative and progressive approach to joint working and training in the management of breast disease.
Main duties of the job
Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of Breast Surgery patients. To share with colleagues responsibility for the day to day management of the Breast Surgery Department.
Teaching and training of junior staff and medical students where applicable.
To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).
To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and Audit.
To attend meetings as appropriate.
The successful candidate would be expected to work two sessions a week, either in the morning or the afternoon, with their exact schedules being negotiable and mutually agreed.
The successful appointees are offered a period of training in all aspects of the assessment and diagnosis of benign and malignant breast conditions. This will incorporate initial shadowing of established clinicians and gradual clinical exposure leading to independent, but supervised practice.
You would be joining a surgical department working alongside surgical consultants and junior doctors in a multidisciplinary setting with our team of Breast Care Nurses and supported by a first class radiology service, providing new patients with immediate access to digital mammography and ultrasound with additional breast tomosynthesis, MRI, PET and Nuclear Medicine scanning as necessary. .
