The successful applicant will be a General Radiologist with an interest in MSK radiology.
The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust is the main provider of acute and specialist care services in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. It serves a population of around 430,000 people, a figure that can increase significantly with visitors during the busiest times of the year.
If a newly appointed consultant, the successful applicant will be eligible to apply for additional study leave to undertake up to 3 months additional subspecialty radiology training to meet specific learning objectives that are of benefit to the applicant and the Clinical Imaging Directorate at RCHT. This additional study leave must be taken within 2 years of appointment. There may be a requirement to participate the on call rota during this period of additional study leave.
The successful candidate will join a team of 29 Consultants providing a wide range of general and specialist radiology services andwill be expected to contribute to the second on 1:11 general radiology on call service. First on call is provided by Peninsula Radiology On Call, a network Registrar delivered service.
Main duties of the job
RCHT is a large training centre for the Peninsula Postgraduate School of Radiology. A number of Specialty Registrars rotate through the department at any one time (16 in 2022/3).
Radiology services are based at The Royal Cornwall Hospital. The department however will support Consultants working general radiology sessions at community sites if appropriate. Home workstations are available for consultant radiologists to facilitate more flexible working. For most consultants on a standard full time contract job plans include one day a week for flexible SPA/off work (subject to job planning).
- Provision with Consultant Colleagues of appropriate Subspecialty Radiology services to the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.
- The provision of general elective and emergency radiology services to the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust.
- Support and ensure the efficient functioning of the Clinical Imaging department and service
- Out-of-hours responsibilities, including weekend working and participation in the Consultant on-call rota.
- Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences.
- Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.
- Contribution to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity.
- Participation in medical audit, the Trust's Clinical Governance processes and in CPD.

Clinical Imaging Department
The Trust has teaching hospitals status as part of the Peninsula Medical School, Peninsula Dental School and University of Exeter Medical School. Keeping at the forefront of medical advances, the Trust is continually developing its clinical services and is committed to maximising the range of specialist care that can be offered locally. Allied to this is a growing reputation for research and innovation.
The Clinical Imaging department at RCHT registration with QSI renewed in 2022 and the department was rated as Outstanding by the CQC in 2018.
All major diagnostic imaging modalities are provided at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. The PACS system was replaced in 2013 and is now with Insignia as part of a southwest consortium installation, linking all peripheral sites with the Royal Cornwall Hospital. The PACS system is currently being reprocured. PACS workstations are installed in dedicated reporting areas with image viewing also available via any networked Trust PC using WebPACS technology. All reporting is performed via Wellbeing CRIS and Dragon voice recognition software in dedicated ergonomically designed reporting rooms. Workstations are also available for home reporting.
Screening and IR: The main department has a general fluoroscopy room with a digital C-arm remote screening unit for non-vascular intervention and general fluoroscopy. Interventional Radiology is provided in a dedicated theatre suite with dedicated recovery. There is a Hybrid operating theatre for Vascular intervention and co-located floor mounted screening room for non-vascular interventions. Coronary angiography is performed in a separate facility of two laboratories.
MRI Provision: The purpose-built MRI unit comprises two Philips 1.5 T scanners (Intera D-Stream and Achieva). A third Philips 1.5T MRI scanner was commissioned in September 2018 and provides outpatient MRI in a dedicated relocatable unit on The RCHT site. The new MRI department with two new Philips scanners and space for a third is due to open in 2023.
CT provision: In the main scanning suite there are both a Canon 128 slice scanner and a GE Revolution with dual headed pump injectors. A Canon Aquilion 1 Genesis multislice CT was installed in 2019 in the Emergency Department and there is a GE Evo at West Cornwall Hospital. A fifth GE Evo CT scanner was commissioned in Bodmin in autumn 2022.
Ultrasound provision:- Ultrasound machines are leased within the Trust as part of a managed service contract with Canon. The main scanning suite has 4 advanced Canon Aplio ultrasound machines. There are also further Aplio machines in the IR suite and at Bodmin, Camborne, St. Austell and West Cornwall Hospitals. The ultrasound contract has recently been renewed with new equipment supplied by Canon due in 2021.
The Trauma and General Trelawny X-Ray Department has three digital radiography (DR) general x-ray rooms adjacent to the Emergency Department.
Nuclear Medicine, located in a dedicated department, equipped with two hybrid CT systems (including a new 64 slice GE Discovery unit commissioned in 2018). A third dual head gamma camera is currently being replaced. A full range of nuclear medicine investigations is performed and the department has a particular interest in hybrid imaging. Radio-isotope therapy is available locally. The Trust hosts a PET-CT service delivered in partnership with Alliance Medical Ltd.
Symptomatic mammography is provided in the Mermaid Centre. This also acts as the Assessment Centre for the Cornwalls Breast Screening Programme.
West Cornwall Hospital is located 27 miles to the west, in Penzance. There are 75 beds on this site along with day case, rehabilitation, pharmacy and radiology services and a satellite dialysis unit. Outpatient clinics for a large range of specialties also take place at this site. The x-ray department has two general rooms, an ultrasound room and a 128 slice CT scanner (mentioned above).
The Community Diagnostic Centre in Bodmin provides plain film radiography, ultrasound, CT and mobile MRI.
There are also imaging departments carrying out general X-ray and/or ultrasound work in a number of community hospitals around the county. These are at Bude, Camborne/Redruth, Falmouth, Helston (US only), Newquay, St. Austell and St. Marys, Isles of Scilly. The Directorate of Clinical Imaging is responsible for staffing these departments.
