The Pharmacy Technical Services Unit based at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro currently have a vacancy for a Band 5 Senior Technician to train with us in a role subject to Annex 21 terms and conditions.
We would welcome applicants from hospital and community pharmacy that have a desire to expand their knowledge and gain expertise in this very specialised area of pharmacy.
Banding and starting salary will be dependent upon qualifications and prior experience - Band 5 (annexe 21) allows for in role training to be completed over a specific time frame. The post holder if not experienced in Technical Services, will be expected to complete intensive in-house training followed by undertaking Pre and In Process Checking training allowing them to check products to be made under both Section 10 exemption and also under our Specials license. On-call duties, weekend and Bank Holiday working on rotation is required.
Upon completion of this training the role will include supporting the Lead Operations Technician and Lead Training technician in managing the Unit, provision of supervision and training of other Technical Services staff, and preparation of a wide range of products in aseptic, chemotherapy, radiopharmacy and non-sterile areas.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to complete relevant training and accreditations to meet the criteria of a Senior Pharmacy Technician Band 5.This will include in-house training in all aspects of aseptic manufacture including chemotherapy, aseptic and radiopharmacy products and the associated duties required to enable the facility to meet the daily manufacturing demands of the Trust.The post holder will also be expected to complete Pre and In Process Checking (PIPC) accreditationOnce fully trained and accreditation in PIPC has been attained, under the direction of the Lead Technicians the post holder will be responsible for the co-ordination of day to day activities associated with all aspects of pharmacy technical services in order to support the needs of patients and which meet standards of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).The post holder will act as a validated dispenser for the manufacture of a range of sterile products, support the manufacture of radiopharmaceutical products and assist in the requirements of providing a non-sterile manufacturing service. The post holder will also provide direct supervision of a team of technicians and pharmacy assistants and support the requirements of the department Quality Management systems.Having completed specialist PIPC accreditation the post holder will also beresponsible for checking batches of medicines to be prepared under the Medicines Act 1968 Section 10 exemption for individual patients.

These medicines must be appropriately labelled for individual patients with advice and instructions for storage and use, and be generated at the time of preparation of the medicine. Injections will include hazardous products such as cancer chemotherapy agents or radioactive materials, and less hazardous products such as nutrition and aseptic medicines. This will require moderate effort in a restrictive sitting or standing position, often for prolonged periods, whilst maintaining high levels of concentration and accuracyduring preparation of injections, using isolator barrier technology.Participate in the daily, weekly, monthly or six monthly cleaning activities associated with maintaining the unit to strict GMP guidelinesContribute to the activities associated with the supply of radio pharmaceuticals and non-sterile medicinal products including the releasing of products for use.Train and assess technicians and assistants as they rotate through the different production areas gaining the required skills to become validated dispensers in those areas.Review and generate Standard Operating Procedures and associated documents to enable the compliant and effective running of the technical services unit.Contribute to both internal and multi-disciplinary meetings in support of maintaining and improving all aspects of the services provided by the department
