Job summary

The successful candidate will join a team of 5 existing IRs providing a wide range of general and specialist interventions andwould be expected to contribute to the current 7 day, daytime only, emergency IR service. Current expectation is that a 24/7 1:6 on-call rota will be introduced in 2023.

The Royal Cornwall Hospital is a Vascular Unit with 6 Vascular consultant surgeons working closely with the IR team. The bespoke IR department comprises a Hybrid endovascular suite (Siemens Artis Zeego) where EVAR and other joint cases are performed as well as all other elective and emergency vascular IR. Alongside this suite is a second IR theatre (Siemens Artis Zee) used primarily for non-vascular interventions. The hybrid vascular suite is due for replacement/refurbishment in 2023.

The normal working week in IR comprises 9 vascular sessions, 5 non-vascular sessions, and 4 biopsy/aspiration/drainage sessions. The department is located within a daycase theatre complex with admission and recovery areas allowing the majority of elective IR procedures to be performed independently as day cases. There are also shared office facilities, consulting rooms and a reporting room comprising two workstations. The IR staffing includes an enthusiastic team of specialist radiographers and nurses, the latter also providing the Trust's vascular access and paracentesis service.One of the GI Radiologists performs EUS and interventions with one of the IRs also training in this technique.

IR Job Plans will include reporting sessions for specialist and general radiology and the provision of a second diagnostic subspecialty is encouraged but not mandatory.A subspecialty interest in chest radiology (diagnostic and interventional) would be welcomed to support the Respiratory MDT and help development of the ablation service.

RCHT is a large training centre for the Peninsula Postgraduate School of Radiology. A number of Specialty Registrars rotate through the department at any one time (16 in 2022/3).

All IR services are based at The Royal Cornwall Hospital. The department however will support Consultants working general radiology sessions at community sites if appropriate. Home workstations are available for consultant radiologists to facilitate more flexible working.

The successful candidate will have appropriate subspecialty training in IR. They will be a Fellow of and accredited by the Royal College of Radiologists, or will be within six months of acquiring a CCT in Clinical Radiology, or otherwise be on the Specialist Register.
