As part of our workforce expansion plan we have a vacancy for a Band 7 Healthcare Scientist to join our small and friendly Radiation Physics team based at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.
The Clinical & Radiation Physics Group provides scientific and technical services in support of uses of ionising and non-ionising radiations support to all users of radiation within the Cornwall healthcare community. This includes providing specialist advisory roles to the Trust and other customers regarding safe use of radiations in order to protect patients, staff and members of the public from associated risks of exposure.
You will have a broad background in diagnostic imaging techniques. The post holder will primarily act to assist in the in the optimisation/audit of all imaging techniques & new equipment with particular regard to interventional radiology (including cardiac catheterisation labs) and fluoroscopy, CT imaging and Mammography.

Main duties of the job
- Support the quality assurance programme for imaging equipment.
- Act as an Operator under the IRMER regulations.
- Supervise the work of support staff and trainees.
- Research imaging techniques and make recommendations for changes to local practice.
- Undertake audits of patient dose and image quality & write reports.
- Participate in review and improvement of a range of imaging techniques.
- Support the provision of radiation protection services.
About us
If the lure of Cornwall's rugged coastline, magnificent beaches, rolling countryside, vast array of gourmet pubs and fine dining opportunities isn't enough, our Clinical Imaging service offers some of the latest technology and is a rapidly expanding service.
The Clinical Imaging service CT equipment includes two Canon Aquilion One and two GE Revolution scanners with a fifth scanner soon to be installed at the new Community Diagnostic Centre in Bodmin. Our interventional service includes two Siemens Cath Labs, a Siemens Zeego and two Siemens Fluoroscopy units. The Cornwall Breast Screening service has three mobile and three fixed Siemens mammography units, soon to be upgraded to include tomosynthesis and contrast enhanced mammography. Our Nuclear Medicine department is about to undergo major remodelling and installation of a new gamma camera to complement our existing 2 GE Discovery cameras. There are several major developments in progress or planned, including accommodation for two new MRI scanners and the building of a dedicated Women's and Children's wing.
As well as the three main RCHT sites (Truro, St Michael's and West Cornwall) there are also seven satellite sites across the county at Stratton, Camborne/Redruth, Bodmin, St Austell, Newquay, Falmouth and, last but by no means the least, the idyllic Isles of Scilly.
Due to the geography of the beautiful countryside in Cornwall and the locations of our community hospitals, a full driving license is essential.
