Locum Consultant in Virtual Gastroenterology

Job summary
This post is aimed at providing Consultant Gastroenterology virtual outpatient clinic services at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro, Cornwall. The successful candidate is expected to provide virtual new and follow up outpatient consultations.
The unit functions as a multidisciplinary service with close collaboration with upper and lower GI surgery, GI radiology, oncology and pathology. There are currently twelve gastrointestinal surgeons, four with upper GI and eight with colorectal sub-specialisation. Upper GI cancer, complex hepato-bilary and pancreatic surgery have recently become centralised at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. Cases are discussed at a regional MDT by video link and RCHT upper GI surgeons travel to Derriford to operate on these patients. Non-cancer upper GI surgery remains on site at RCHT. Lower GI cancer and complex IBD surgery is provided on site at RCHT. Four consultant radiologists have a particular interest in GI diagnostic radiology. We also have an Interventional Radiology team which we involve in GI procedures. MRI and CT scanners are available on site. Endoscopic ultrasound has been developed jointly between medical gastroenterology and radiology and is used extensively in the staging of upper GI cancer as well as some hepatic procedures.
Main duties of the job
Other duties of post-holders are:
- Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of gastroenterology patients.
- To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and Audit
- To work with the Specialty Management team to ensure that services are delivered efficiently and reflect best practice with processes and governance to match - this is a new role and will involve full virtual delivery of a service that is currently delivered by consultants within the gastroenterology service.
- To attend meetings as appropriate
- Fulfil duties of weekly timetable
- To ensure the provision of good standards of practice and care as described in the GMC Guidance 'Duties of a Doctor' are followed at all times; and that bad practice is reported
- To ensure that clinical practice is both effective and efficient and that appropriate monitoring of clinical care takes place
- To work with the Specialty Management team to ensure that services are delivered efficiently and reflect best practice with processes and governance to match - this may require new and flexible ways of working in the future.
- To provide continuing responsibility for the care of patients under their care and for the proper organisation and functioning of clinical
- To take responsibility for ensuring that critical clinical incidents, as defined in the Trust's 'Critical Incident Policy', are reported in a timely
