We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated Radiographer with an interest in, or experience of Breast Imaging to join our friendly multi-disciplinary team at The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust's Mermaid Centre. The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust's (RCHT) Breast Unit within the Mermaid Centre provides comprehensive breast care to patients from Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. It is one of the largest Breast Units in the South West and supports the four tier structure having one Consultant Radiographer and four Advanced Practitioner Radiographers undertaking Film Reading and Core Biopsies. Role extension is positively encouraged and training time is allocated to meet individual needs.
Main duties of the job
The Specialist Practitioner will be required to undertake a full range of mammography duties. They will also comply with the Ionising Radiation Regulation (IRR 17), Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) regulation (IR(ME)R 17) and the Trust Radiation Safety Policy. They may authorise any plain film radiography with a referral criteria which falls within the Royal College of Radiologists Guidelines and the Directorate Procedures Manual.
Maintains the highest professional standards during the care of patients within the breast imaging service in line with nationally and locally agreed guide lines
Providing specialist radiographic breast imaging techniques in the mammography screening service, working within NHSBSP standards.
Performing specialised imaging assessment examinations and symptomatic clinics
Providing radiographic expertise to the imaging consultants and breast multi-disciplinary team
Performing the calibration and QA of the imaging equipment
Responsible for supervising and ensuring that junior members of staff and students are trained appropriately and follow departmental procedures

.The unit's goal is to deliver the latest and highest standard of care for sympotmatic patients, screening patients, family history, and high risk patients and to remain at the forefront of diagnosis, treatment, research and training in breast disease; exploring new frontiers in preventing, diagnosing and treating breast cancer. Patients are treated in an evidence-based, multi-disciplinary clinical setting following local network and nationally agreed guidelines and the unit actively supports and encourages patients to participate in national and international research trials and provides a major commitment to research.
Although based at The Royal Cornwall Hospital you will also be required to work on our Mobile Breast Screening Units situated around the county. At the last NHS BSP QA visit, the Mermaid Centre was identified as one of the top performing units in the country.
Ideally you will hold a post graduate qualification in Breast Imaging, however, if you do not hold the post graduate qualification in Breast Imaging, training at Kingston / St Georges Hospital London will be provided at Band 5 with progression to Band 6 upon successful completion of this qualification. Newly qualified radiographers will be considered for this post.Although this is a full time post working 37.5 hours per week, job-share or part-time work will be considered.
