Job summary
Cornwall Health Library provides information and resources to healthcare staff and students across Cornwall. We pride ourselves on contributing to patient care by offering evidence and training to our diverse user groups, which include; all NHS staff roles, general practitioners, hospice staff, paramedics and medical, dental, nursing and midwifery students. The main library is based in the Knowledge Spa on the Royal Cornwall Hospital site and provides a physical space that supports our users' work, learning and well-being.
Main duties of the job
Our library team is friendly and works hard to support each other. We need a new team member with a library qualification or other relevant experience to help us provide our excellent service. As Library Assistant, the role is strongly focussed on:
- Excellent and friendly customer service
- Helping to maintain the library environment
- Assisting the Senior Library Assistant with Inter Library Loans
We are looking for a pro-active, confident and compassionate individual to join our team.
This is an exciting role, where the post-holder will have the opportunity to develop their library skills whilst supported by a knowledgeable and caring team.
This is a part-time post, 18.75 hours per week and is based in Cornwall Health Library on the Treliske site in Truro. Preferred working days are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, from 8.30am, but can be discussed for the successful applicant.

Job responsibilities
The Library Assistant will play an essential role in the delivery of frontline services to library users, including, delivering issue desk and enquiry services, core library and administrative work, shelving and tidying, and participating in the development of the library service. Desk duties are arranged on a rota basis.
Deliver core counter services and enquiry services in accordance with agreed standards and procedures on a rota basis.
The post holder is required to:
Manage book circulation (e.g. loans, returns, renewals, reservations, overdues, borrower information) during circulation desk duty using the automated library management system.
Enter new library user data onto automated library system.
Handle library income, using the cash register, from sources like stationery sales, service and facility charges.
Generate and distribute overdue notices when on the enquiry desk.
Work within, and inform users of, library Complaints Policy. During desk duty, act as first point of call in resolving any user issues and complaints, referring them to the relevant member of the Library Management Team where required.
Assist library users with IT problems, referring them to the Library Management Team or Cornwall IT Services or University of Plymouth IT support if necessary.
Assist in the use of software programmes such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel.
Assist in the use of printers and photocopiers.
Advise library users on compliance with national legislation such as Copyright regulations, Freedom of Information Act and Data Protection Act.
Participate in the duty rota for late shifts (17.30 finish) with sole responsibility for the management of the library service when performing evening cover, including Health and Safety and security of the library.
Assist users with information enquiries, which may be in-depth and detailed, in specialist subject areas.
Refer enquiries to another staff member if necessary.
Deliver library inductions to individuals when requested, explaining use of the library, and providing handouts, forms and tours.
Assist library users on an ad hoc basis in locating relevant literature using most appropriate resources available.
Assist Senior Library Assistant with Inter Library Loans. Involves: checking citation details of each request, locating supplying library based on ability to supply and by cost. Recording activity on a database, and dispatching documents by post or electronically. Responding to enquiries from library users and tracking supply/non-supply of items.
In addition to these duties employees are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
