Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Critical Care Nurse with a passion for education to promote clinical excellence by providing education, advice and support for nurses and other health professionals within the Integrated Critical Care Units.

As a Clinical Educator, you will be responsible for the supervision, support and education of junior staff members of the ICU team. You will be accountable for ensuring that agreed professional standards are reflected in clinical practice and be responsible for the provision of highly specialist expertise/training to nursing, and other support staff working within the units. You will also be responsible for assisting the Critical Care Manager in the provision of ongoing education and training for practitioners throughout the organisation working with acutely / critically ill patients. You will therefore need to be motivated and flexible to help meet any challenges arising, and have significant critical care expertise

Main duties of the job

The primary purpose of this role is to develop and deliver on-going education, training and support for all members of the MDT.

Identify all opportunities for themselves and others where learning can take place, both formally and informally.

Undertake a Training Needs Analysis and maintain registers of training, support ward and departmental sisters/charge nurses to ensure mandatory training is compliant with Trust standard.

Act as a champion for professional accountability and standards, ensuring that professional practices are in line with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements, and Trust Policy.

May be required to undertake a Team Lead role.

Deputise for the Critical Care Manager where appropriate.

To support the provision of ongoing education and training for practitioners throughout the organisation working with acutely / critically ill patients.

Assist in the co-ordination, delivery and assessment of HEI-validated modules within STSFT

To continuously drive practice development and improve clinical standards in critical care in line with the Clinical Governance Framework.

To maintain the delivery and quality of services provided within the care environment including the care delivered, setting of nursing standards and leadership of the team working clinically with staff where needed to help the acquisition of skills, knowledge and competence.

Provide SIM sessions and bedside teaching.

Ensure STSFT is compliant with GPICS standards.

Support newly qualified / appointed staff to complete the National Competency Framework for Adult Critical Care Nurses (Steps 1-3) within 2 years of appointment.

Develop, refine and deliver education and training provision to complement and reinforce learning achieved in Higher Educational Institutes.

Develop, refine and deliver assessments of competence on completion of step 1 3 competencies to ensure validity and reliability of the training received, emphasising practice based and simulation modalities.

Ensure a minimum of 50% of registered staff within the units are in possession of the national post registration award in critical care nursing (CC3N 2016, GPICS 2015 NHSE Adult Critical Care Service Specification 2014).

Contribute to the clinical work of the critical care units, undertaking clinical duties and sharing specialist knowledge and skills in the care of level 3, level 2 and level 1 patients.
