Job summary

Chronic Pain is part of the Division of Perioperative and Critical Care together with Theatres, Pre-operative Assessment, Psychology, Sterile Services and ITU. The Clinical Director is a permanent member of the management team for the Theatre Division. Consultants have roles as Clinical Leads in the constituent areas.

The Chronic Pain team consists of pain specialists, psychologists and specialist pharmacists. As well as outpatient commitments there is a responsibility, in conjunction with the acute pain team, to review inpatients with complex chronic pain issues on a referral basis.

The role also includes cover of both elective and emergency anaesthetic work with an on-call rota within Anaesthesia that covers both acute sites at a frequency of 1:22.

Main duties of the job

To work under the direction of the Clinical Directors to co-ordinate and deliver the strategic and operational aspects of Chronic Pain provision to the population of South Tyneside and Sunderland. These will reflect National and Local priorities including the strategic direction of South Tyneside and Sunderland Hospitals Trust and the Division of Perioperative and Critical Care.

You are expected to be on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of obtaining your CCST in Anaesthesia at the time of accepting the Post.

Consultant performance is monitored within the Directorate and strong emphasis is given to personal career development, in-line with clinical governance. All consultants must comply with Trust policy for revalidation and job planning.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates / post-graduates.
  • Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team (MDT) for chronic pain including working alongside psychologists, physiotherapists and nurses.

Desirable

  • Evidence skills required for general / trauma anaesthesia appropriate for the district general hospital population.
  • Demonstrates the ability to organise and deliver management activity and training.
  • Evidence of training / experience in ultrasound guided procedures / advanced interventions.
  • Evidence of skills required for management of anaesthetic on-calls in busy district general hospital including Paediatrics / Obstetrics.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Must hold FRCA or equivalent qualification.
  • Hold a CCST / CESR and be on GMC Specialist Register or be within six months of being admitted to the GMC Specialist Register by interview date.
  • Successful completion of 12 months of Advanced Pain Training as per RCOA guidelines.

Desirable

  • Registration towards or hold FFPMRCA or equivalent such as ESRA- DPM, MSc in Pain Management.
  • Certificate / Diploma / Degree in Education / Research.

  • Possess good interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrable evidence of good team working.
  • Able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements.
