Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in the restructure of psychology services within Specialist Palliative Care Services across Sunderland and South Tyneside. You will form part of a team of psychologists and psychological practitioners to continue to develop and embed psychology services for patients and relatives accessing specialist palliative care services.

You will be supported by a larger Clinical Health Psychology Service department, and have access to CPD and specialist clinical supervision and leadership support.

You will work into well-established Specialist Palliative Care Services within St Benedicts Hospice delivering both direct patient and relative psychological assessment and intervention, consultation and training and supervision. Psychology is a highly-valued role within palliative care services, and you will be supported to continue to develop and grow the Service.

Main duties of the job

You will have previous experience of working in physical health settings, or cancer and palliative care services, working with MDTs providing both direct and indirect psychological care. You will be skilled in delivering supervision and consultation to both psychologists/psychological practitioners and other professionals. You will work in a variety of clinic settings including inpatients, out patients and in the community. The Post is for 22.5 hours per week but flexible working patterns can be arranged.

Essential

  • Experience in applying clinical/counselling psychology within the NHS.

  • Experience of exercising clinical responsibility for patient's psychological care and treatment, within the context of a multidisciplinary care plan with appropriate supervision.
  • Experience of providing supervision.

Desirable

  • Experience of working within physical health services/ cancer care/ palliative care.
  • Experience of teaching and training non-psychologists in psychological therapy skills.
  • Experience of application of psychology in different cultural contexts.

Qualifications

Essential

  • An upper second class Honours Degree or higher in Psychology with eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartership with British Psychological Society (BPS).
  • Post-graduate Doctorate in Clinical/Counselling Psychology accredited by HCPC (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996 as accredited by the BPS).
  • HCPC registered as a Practitioner Psychologist.

Desirable

  • Additional training in relevant areas e.g. CBT, CFT, ACT, EMDR.
  • Supervisor training.

Skills and knowledge

Essential

  • Doctoral level knowledge of clinical psychology including lifespan of development psychology.
  • Models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology and two or more distinct psychological therapies including CBT.
  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management, frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
  • Ability to use the highest level of interpersonal and communication skills both verbal and written + to convey/receive highly-complex/sensitive information effectively requiring empathy and reassurance in a highly-emotive atmosphere.

  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and its implications for clinical practice.
