We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well-integrated Ophthalmology team. An opportunity has arisen for a General Practitioner to undertake sessional work in Ophthalmology clinics held at Sunderland Eye Infirmary or prime-contracted outreach hospitals. The Trust wishes to continue to develop relationships between primary and secondary care and these sessions offer the opportunity for a local General Practitioner to increase their knowledge of ophthalmological problems in an educational environment and to improve the interface between primary and secondary care.

Main duties of the job

Previous experience in ophthalmology is not essential as training will be provided. Educational opportunities will be encouraged during clinics, which are all consultant-led. In addition, the post holder will be encouraged to attend educational sessions in the department. Previous formal ophthalmology experience is desirable but training will be provided for those lacking such experience. General practice experience is essential and local experience of primary care is desirable.

To maintain the high levels of patient satisfaction in the unit by helping to provide a Consultant led service.

To support the current Consultants in the medical and surgical management of medical retina and Glaucoma patients. To audit outcomes and compare to the standards currently being set.

To help with teaching and training of junior doctors, optometrists, ophthalmic nurses and medical students.

To actively participate in service development within the sub-speciality and across the entire Ophthalmology unit

The post will involve outpatient clinics or sessions at Sunderland Eye Infirmary Outpatients department composed of one clinical session of four hours. The location of the clinic is open to discussion according to the needs of the service and the applicant.

Post-holders are encouraged to attend internal CPD held in the Ophthalmology Department.

There are four sessions of work available per week.
