Job summary

This post is for a Band 6/7 depending on Qualifications/Experience, may start as a Band 6 role moving to a Band 7 when competencies are achieved.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced cardiology nurse to work within cardiology services across both South Tyneside and Sunderland Royal Hospital sites. This dynamic and skillful nurse will work alongside well-established Cardiology teams leading the management and care delivery for patients with cardiac arrhythmias. This Specialist Nurse role will consist of providing expert clinical knowledge to patients with cardiology conditions and managing their conditions effectively. They will be a requirement to contribute to the ongoing development and delivery of nurse lead service for patients.

We are also excited to offer this position as a developmental post for the right candidate who does not possess non-medical prescribing but would be willing to work towards it. This would be as a trainee CNP in a band 6 role till training is completed.

Main duties of the job

It is expected the post holder will have sound cardiology knowledge and skills in management of patients in the acute setting. Having experience of managing patients with cardiac arrhythmias is desirable.

The post holder will hold well-developed and effective interpersonal and communication skills and should also possess good facilitation and IT skills. You must be able to demonstrate the ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team, having excellent clinical skills to deliver exceptional standards of care for all patients and their families. The candidate must be well organised and enthusiastic in participating with service development through audit and peer review. Helping to drive and sustain new initiatives to meet local and national standards, as well as ensuring care meets our own Trust values.

  • To coordinate the delivery and development of the cardiac arrhythmia service using effective evidence-based practice in line with agreed national standards for patient safety and monitoring.
  • To work closely with the Medical, Nursing and Professionals Allied to Medicine teams within the Trust to facilitate the prompt, evidence-based treatment of patients with cardiac arrhythmias.
  • To triage patients, prioritising clinical need and highlighting those patients who require immediate medical intervention to the cardiology/ medical team.
  • To work autonomously, admitting, and clerking appropriate emergency / cardiac arrhythmia admissions, assessing individual needs, undertaking and reporting on biomedical investigations, determining a differential diagnosis and initiating appropriate holistic, evidenced-based treatment and care.
  • To make autonomous decisions regarding admitting or discharging patients within agreed protocols and arranging outpatient appointments for those being discharged under nurse-led protocols.
  • To support the Emergency Department with the assessment and management of patients with suspected cardiac arrhythmias according to the agreed pathways by providing an in-reach service and utilise delegated discharge following discussion with the on-call Cardiologist when appropriate.
  • Manage/lead nurse led clinics in relation to reviewing patients and play a key role in optimising complex treatment regimes, facilitating hospital discharge and preventing avoidable hospital admissions.
  • To contribute to the organisation of multidisciplinary, patient centred care.
  • To be accountable for the planning and delivery of safe, effective and compassionate patient care in relation to dedicated pathways of care, working as an autonomous practitioner within Cardiology.
  • To provide specialist clinical advice and support to patients and clinical staff within the Trust on the assessment, management and care of patients within Cardiology.
  • To continuously improve clinical care standards in line with the clinical governance framework.
  • To exercise accountability as set out in the NMC Code.
  • To ensure effective communication internally and externally regarding patient care and resources.
  • Provide education and training to clinical staff across the Trust.
  • Provide expert specialist clinical advice and support to patients and clinical staff within the Trust on the management and care of patients within Cardiology including those with cardiac arrhythmias, undergoing coronary intervention or device implantation.
