Job summary

What is the programme about?

  • Enabling registered nurses to develop more specialist knowledge, skills and experience through working directly with our cancer teams;
  • Providing career development opportunities for individuals interested in cancer nursing and capable of progressing to a higher level;
  • Developing the clinical competence, skills and knowledge of each successful intern;
  • Making positive improvements for cancer within their area of practice.

Successful applicants will be funded for 7.5 hours per week for 12 months at (AfC) band 6 to complete the programme.

Applicants must be 100% compliant with their mandatory training and have the support of their manager to be seconded for the length of the programme (minimum 345 hours clinical practice).

The Cancer Internship Programme is funded by Health Education England.

Main duties of the job

Interns will be expected to:

  • Develop their knowledge and skills through the utilisation of a competency framework - with a view to identifying training needs and ongoing professional development with access to relevant cancer training;
  • Have the opportunity to work as part of a specialist cancer team at STSFT, through the provision of clinical placements across a variety of cancer specialties on both sites;
  • Work collaboratively with our Macmillan team around the personalised care of cancer patients to increase the interns understanding of the wider needs and services involved in the cancer patients' journey;
  • Be supported to identify a service improvement initiative for cancer to implement within their current area of practice;
  • Be accredited at level 6 through the completion of 'Principles of Integrated Practice in Cancer and other Long-Term Conditions' module, delivered through self-directed distance learning with the University of Teesside.
