Consultant in Gastroenterology at South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS
Foundation Trust.
There is one full time post available; based
primarily at South Tyneside Hospital. There may be a requirement for the post
holder to fulfil some duties at another site from their base.
We are looking for an outstanding, highly
motivated individual to join our established team of twelve consultants (a
thirteenth consultant will be joining early 2024) and specialist nurses in
providing and facilitating a comprehensive high quality gastroenterology
service for our patients. The successful applicant will work 10 PAs within the
speciality with the opportunity to work part time/flexible working/increased
PAs. All subspecialty interests are encouraged. The trust is an immersion
endoscopy training site for the Northern region. There are exciting
opportunities to be involved in various roles in the Northern Endoscopy
Training Academy (NETA).
The Gastroenterology department sits within
the Directorate of General Internal Medicine across two sites. The team oversee their inpatients in two
dedicated wards (one on each site).
A full range of outpatient services are
provided. The department is well supported by an excellent team of junior
doctors, nursing staff and administrative support.
Main duties of the job
As a medical consultant at South
Tyneside & Sunderland NHS FT trust, you will have continuing responsibility
for care of your inpatients and outpatients. You will be in charge of inpatients
of consultant colleagues during periods of on call duty, holidays, study leave
and short term sickness. You will be expected to supervise junior medical staff
allocated to you and you may be a nominated educational and clinical supervisor
to identified junior medical staff assigned to gastroenterology with
appropriate training provided if necessary. You will also be expected to
undertake, as part of the team, an active role in regular departmental clinical
governance meetings.
You will share responsibility for
provision and development of the gastroenterology service with the consultant
team and successful recruitment will help to develop seven day services at the
South Tyneside site.
The post holder is expected to possess
Membership/Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and to be on the GMC
Specialist Register for both General Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at
the time of taking up the post.
It
is anticipated that the entire team will contribute to co-ordinated working
across both sites and improve efficiency and patient pathways.
Significant
research opportunities are available and members of the team lead and/or are
involved national studies in endoscopy and gastroenterology.
