Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Haematologist. The South of Tyne Haematology team aims to provide excellent, holistic care for people living with haematological conditions and run a well-designed service which is a pleasure to work in.

Our team comprises 7 Consultants employed by South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust (STSFT) and an 8th Consultant employed by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in Gateshead. We provide clinical and laboratory services at STSFT; services at QEH are provided via a Service Level Agreement.

In-patient work at Sunderland Royal Hospital includes the delivery of acute leukaemia induction and managing patients undergoing autologous stem cell transplantation. Out-patient clinics run on all 3 sites. Day units deliver out-patient chemotherapy on all 3 sites.

We provide advice to GPs south of Tyne & Wear and hospital specialities at STSFT and QEH. Consultants report bone marrow biopsies, blood films and other specialised tests and work with laboratory staff to support transfusion. We provide non-malignant paediatric Haematology clinics and a Teenage & Young Adult (TYA) service for malignant disorders, working closely with the regional centre in Newcastle.

We are looking for a colleague who shares our enthusiasm for Haematology excellence. Specialist interests in research, Haemato-Oncology, paediatric Haematology/TYA, transfusion, laboratory reporting, haemostasis and thrombosis and medical education are welcomed.

The post-holder will be based at SRH with some sessions at South Tyneside Hospital (STDH). The role includes:

1 in 7 on-call weekends managing the Haematology in-patients on B28 at SRH, liaison work and film reporting for QEH and STSFT

Once weekly non-resident overnight on-call

2-3 adult Haematology clinics per week across both sites clinics have a mix of haemato-oncology, haemostasis and thrombosis and general haematology patients

Review of patients on the day units at SRH and STDH

In-patient and out-patient chemotherapy prescribing

Advice and Guidance to GPs

1 in 3 ward round of Haematology patients admitted to STDH under Medicine (face-to-face and remote reviews)

Laboratory reporting of bone marrow biopsies; reporting of blood films and other specialised Haematology tests when on-call

Attendance at the weekly Consultant Grand Round on B28

Attendance at the weekly MDT & involvement in the bone marrow morphology MDT on a rotating basis

Although the post is a full-time post, applicants who wish to work less than full-time are encouraged to apply.

The post holder should possess Membership of the Royal College of Physicians and Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists and be on the GMC Full Specialist Register with a License to Practice. If UK-trained, the post holder must be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).

  • Experience in routine laboratory Haematology including regular reporting of blood films, bone marrow biopsies, advising on coagulation problems and transfusion issues.
  • Have experience in training undergraduates and postgraduates.
  • Experience with and training in induction therapy for acute leukaemia.

Desirable

  • Have experience in the development of a multidisciplinary group for clinical service provision.
  • Experience with and training in autologous stem cell rescue.
  • Competence to administer intrathecal chemotherapy.
