South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust

Consultant in Medical Microbiology and/or Infectious Diseases

The closing date is 07 July 2025

Job summary

Interviews to be held on 24th July.

This is an enticing opportunity to join our existing team of microbiologists and infectious diseases physicians working across our two acute hospitals and various other services in South Tyneside and Sunderland. This is an exciting time in the field, as microbiology and ID services work more closely together, and locally where we are expanding our reach within the organisation and sub-regionally. There are opportunities to work with specialised services in the Trust, to become involved with ID liaison and clinics, to work closely with the laboratory in Gateshead, and to further develop our antimicrobial stewardship activities. We welcome applications from doctors with, or anticipating, CCST in medical microbiology and/or infectious diseases. The role will be tailored very much towards the interests of the successful candidate

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role will be tailored to the successful applicant, but will include participation in a busy day-time clinical liaison rota, validation of laboratory results, attendance at ward rounds on the Sunderland integrated critical care unit and liaison visits to other parts of the hospital as required. The existing consultants work as a team, each of us with our own particular interests, and will be looking for an enthusiastic colleague to join that team. We work closely with staff across the Trust, in multiple disciplines and various grades. The successful candidate must have excellent clinical knowledge and interpersonal skills in order to contribute to this work. The successful candidate will be required to work one weekend in six, typically offering in-person or telephone advice between 9am and 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays at Sunderland Royal Hospital and/or S Tyneside District Hospital. The successful candidate will be required to participate in an on-call rota operating between 5pm and 9am shared with colleagues at a neighbouring hospital, typically one night in ten. On call work is recompensed in the form of time off in lieu.
