Applications are invited for the post of Middle Grade Trust Doctor in Nephrology.

Sunderland Renal Unit is a dynamic department that has undergone significant reorganisation, investment and expansion in recent years. We provide high-quality, high-continuity patient-focused care. We work hard for our patients and have created a supportive working environment for the whole team.

We operate a range of sub-specialty nephrology clinics and have growing numbers of home dialysis and transplant patients. Innovations in recent years include our Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology service and our in house Assisted Home Dialysis Team. We are developing a national post-graduate qualification in Interventional Nephrology and Point of Care Ultrasound. We are working with Sunderland Medical School to deliver and develop their undergraduate renal medicine curriculum. We have several international links, including our ISN sister unit in Tanzania.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a colleague who shares our enthusiasm for renal medicine, and who is considering going on to apply for higher specialty training in nephrology. You will work alongside our registrars and consultants and support our department by helping us care for our renal, acute oncology and general medicine inpatients. We will offer mentorship and exposure to a range of renal medicine according to your interest, including renal outpatient clinics and could include interventional nephrology. We will support you to undertake a quality improvement project or become involved in research.

The post-holder will be based at Sunderland Royal Hospital and also provide inpatient work at South Tyneside Hospital.

The post-holder will be expected to possess or be working towards Membership of the Royal College of Physicians and to be on the GMC Register. Further details regarding the specifics of the role can be found within the job description

The post will involve work across sites at South Tyneside District Hospital and Sunderland Royal Hospital. The post is suitable for doctors who have completed IMT training (or equivalent). It would be particularly suitable for doctors who may wish to go on to apply for higher training in nephrology.

Opportunities will be available to participate in the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and simulation training. There are also opportunities to participate in research, quality improvement processes and to gain experience in management and clinical leadership depending on interests and experience.

On-call commitments may vary according to the post and the requirements/experience of the post holder.

The post is for a minimum of six months with options to extend by mutual agreement.

This posts is not recognized for training by the Postgraduate Dean.

Although the post is not recognized for training, trainees will be allocated to a Clinical Supervisor and have the opportunity for supervised learning and feedback. They will also have access to department training, meetings and local teaching.
