Renal Vascular Access Fellow

The closing date is 06 April 2026

Job summary

The Renal Vascular Access fellowship is an innovative post that will provide a combination of training in Nephrology, Interventional Nephrology and Vascular Surgery.

We invite applications from individuals who have completed training to at least the level of either Internal Medicine Training or Core Surgical Training and who are interested in undertaking higher specialty training in Nephrology or Vascular Surgery.

We recognise that there is significant synergy between Nephrology and Vascular specialties, yet the training programmes provide limited opportunities to acquire cross-specialty experience. This need for closer working is particularly apparent in the dialysis vascular access subspecialties but extends to the management of cardiovascular disease including secondary prevention, and management of inpatients who develop renal and other medical complications following surgery.

We seek motivated individual with procedural competence and intellectual curiosity to work collaboratively with all members of the renal and vascular MDTs. The successful candidate will have the ambition to build a career in Nephrology or Vascular Surgery with vascular access as a subspecialty interest, and will be keen to make the most of the diverse learning opportunities in this unique post.

Main duties of the job

Trainees from either medical or surgical background will contribute to vascular access clinics, vascular access MDT, and provide supervised clinical input to renal and vascular inpatients. They will be trained to undertake ultrasound vein mapping and point of care vascular ultrasound to assess arteriovenous fistulae and grafts. They will have the opportunity to work the interventional nephrologists and interventional radiologists in endovascular fistula work, including formation of endo-AVFs. There will be the specific responsibility of progressing care of patients through the vascular access formation and maintenance pathways with the goals of improving definitive vascular access rates. There is an expectation of continuous engagement in quality improvement work and there will be encouragement to prepare work for publication and presentation at national and international conferences.
